Zoë is a very underrated character and this post will talk about why she deserves more attention and appreciation from the fandom.
(This will contain spoilers to The Titan's Curse. Proceed with caution if you have not read/have not finished the Titan's Curse) Please read the entire thing! This took me a while to write, and i'm lowkey proud of it.
Zoë Nightshade was the daughter of Atlas and Pleione, and one of the Hesperides; nymphs of the sunset. The Hesperides helped guard Hera's tree of Golden Apples that resides in the Garden of the Hesperides. The Hesperides also have to take care of Ladon, the murderous and poisonous serpent like dragon with 100 heads, who guards Hera's tree. In the book it is stated that Zoë used to feed Ladon by hand, which is very brave and dangerous. This is a special bond between Zoë and Ladon which none of the other Hesperides have.
Zoë was later exiled, blotted out as if she never existed, because she helped a hero. She helped Hercules devise a plan to trick her father Atlas so he could retrieve some golden apples. She have him a hairpin which turned into the sword Anaklusmos. When her sisters found out about this, they exiled her. Hercules gave Zoë no credit for helping him, which angered Zoë as she had been through a lot of pain, because her own family exiled and resented her. Thus leading to her grudge against all male heroes, especially Hercules.
Harboring a great resentment for Hercules, Zoë joined the Hunters of Artemis. Where for swearing off of men, she received eternal youth, near-immortality, and invulnerability. And she stayed loyal, she stayed loyal for 2000+ years, which I think was the longest any Hunter stayed in the Hunt. I am pretty sure her fatal flaw is loyalty as staying loyal to someone for over 2000+ years is amazing, and very loyal of someone!! During the quest when Zoë saw Artemis pain she ran towards Artemis crying and screaming to let her go while pulling on the chains, she even tried to take the sky from Artemis, but Artemis didn't allow it. We all know that Zoë would've taken the sky without hesitation, which is very loyal of her. But most people just focus on Annabeth and Percy, which is why so many underrated characters get overlooked because all the fandom pays attention to is Percabeth.
Also, Zoë sacrificed herself so Percy could get Annabeth and so they could rescue Artemis, the 4 would never have gotten to where Atlas was if Zoë didn't distract Ladon, which got her bit. And, when Atlas was about to strike and kill Percy, Zoë shot a bunch of arrows at him, distracting him. So if it weren't for Zoë, there would be a good chance that the four plus Annabeth would either be dead, or become Kronos' minions.
This isn't even half of the amazing things Zoë has done, and not even half of the horrible things she's been through. Zoë is always seen as the girl who said "I can see the stars again My Lady" but she is so much more than that. She is an amazing and complex character who deserves a lot of recognition. thanks for coming to my TED Talk. have a good day!!
