Hello, so I would like to talk about what demigods actually have to go through (ex, monster attacks, in some cases running away from home, etc). I have no clue on where to start this but let's go.
Yeah, I'm sure most of you know the "Riordanverse characters need therapy" meme but I do think they really deserve and need it. First off, they're likely not to even get through their teenage years. Most of them don't even survive to get to adulthood. Even Percy was on the verge of death almost every year. For example, Annabeth, a 7 year old, ran away from home and even still somehow managed to survive with two other teenagers. She also saw somebody who was as close as family to her die (Thalia if you couldn't tell). I'm sure many other demigods had stories similar to Annabeth's. They're constantly looking out for themselves and others. Keep in mind, most of them are teenagers or children. They're bound to be mostly naive, and only few of them survive in the end. I mean, I'm not the only one here to read Percy and Annabeth going into Tartarus and back? They barely survived there. I’m sure I’m not the only one who read Silena and Charlie’s deaths. They were only teenagers, they had their whole life ahead of them. It’s so sad. Demigods have an almost constant threat of monsters. Most demigods are always under stress, and most end up suffering a terrible fate, one way or another. Okay, look, they are technically super-humans but that’s a lot of stress for a teenager.
I mean, have you read the beginning of the Lightning Thief? Percy literally warns you.
" Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood.
If you’re reading this because you think you might be one, my advice is: close this book right now. Believe whatever lie your mom or dad told you about your birth, and try to lead a normal life.
Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways. If you’re a normal kid, reading this because you think it’s fiction, great. Read on. I envy you for being able to believe that none of this ever happened. But if you recognize yourself in these pages – if you feel something stirring inside – stop reading immediately. You might be one of us. And once you know that, it’s only a matter of time before they sense it too, and they’ll come for you. "
It gets you killed in painful, nasty ways. Most of these deaths concur before adulthood too. I mean, if the quote isn't enough proof for you, I don't know what is.
Why aren't demigods given a chance to talk about this?
I’m sure most of you reading this post have read House of Hades or Blood of Olympus. I mean, Percy and Annabeth had come back from Tartarus and they were apparently perfectly fine? They went through Tartarus and back, and now the world’s going to end again. It should have been talked about at least once. We did get a couple of scenes in House of Hades (that’s one of the reasons I like that book so much) but not much. Mental health hasn’t really been touched on in the RV, and honestly even for a kids series, it really should, especially for some of the stronger elements in the books.
Well, the obvious is that being a demigod is pretty dangerous. Not only has this post proven the point, but it’s mentioned in the book numerous times. They’re either dead, on the verge of death, or dying most of the time. Now that was my (very bad and messy) conclusion. Thank you for reading.
