Chalice of the Gods has a few solid feats that haven’t been talked about much, mainly since most people haven’t gotten their hands on the book yet.
But there’s an insane feat from Percy that needs to start being brought up more.
For context, Percy did this feat in a cavern with a river, submerged in the river while being pounded around by the god of said river.
This caused him to release his power in a way similar to what happened at Mt St Helens
Here’s the quote:
“My rage exploded.
And so did the river. It blasted away from me in every direction, putting me at ground zero of the detonation—curled up alone in a bubble of air, howling so loudly I could hear myself even over the roar of the torrent. Some part of me had reached outward . . . not just into the pool, but to the source of the river, deep down in the Underworld or maybe Yonkers, and I had pulled it up by its roots. Millions of metric tons of water roared through the cavern, flooding the pool, scouring the cliffs, surging over the riverbanks, and probably surprising a whole bunch of snakes bathing downstream.
At last, the water crashed back around me, settling into its normal flow again.”
This feat is one of the greatest feats ever performed by a demigod in the Riordanverse, so let’s analyze it.
A disoriented Percy pulls water from “the Underworld, or maybe Yonkers”.
How far is the Underworld? A sign in Son of Neptune said:
“NEW ROME 1 MILE; OLD ROME 7280 MLES; HADES 2310 MILES (pointing straight down);RENO 208 MILES, AND CERTAIN DEATH: YOU ARE HERE!”
So the Underworld (Hades) is 2310 miles (3718 km) downwards, which shows absolutely crazy range from Percy.
To put that into perspective, that’s longer than the distance between Los Angeles and Washington D.C. Just crazy.
But, what if it’s Yonkers? That’s less impressive, but Percy is still pulling up the river by its roots, or collecting all the water in this area, so it's crazy regardless.
Now that I’ve established just how impressive the range aspect is, let’s talk about the volume aspect of it, because it’s absolutely insane.
Percy directly pulls “MILLIONS OF METRIC TONS” of water
Let’s convert to a more familiar unit.
Just one metric ton is 264.17 gallons
Millions, plural, as at least 2 million metric tons.
That translates to 528,340,000 gallons.
FIVE HUNDRED MILLION GALLONS
The amount of energy required to move this amount of water is insanely high.
I hope this post showed just how impressive this feat is.
