While in Rick Riordan Series, Helen of Troy is potrayed as a selfish and Vain brat who ran off with Paris and started the Trojan war, in the original myths, Helen is clearly mentioned as being kidnapped against her will and was very much happy to be reunited with Menelaus. And YET PEOPLE BASH HER AND BLAME HER FOR THE TROJAN WAR!!!!!
It's just like the Ramayana where Sita was kidnapped against her will.
There are many instances where Rick hasn't done a good job with the potrayal of the mythos in his stories. His original characters are absolutely great- no doubt about that. But the mythological heroes- a rather poor job, I'm afraid. Hercules, who is a nice guy and really likeable in the stories, is thrown into a fanmade story where an unknown character, who is nowhere mentioned in the original texts is thrown in because Rick felt that Hercules was overrated. In fact , Zoe means 'Life' and is actually a translation in Greek of the Bibical Eve. And Zoe is a modern name whose usage started in the Nineteenth Century. This does not mean I dislike Zoe. I adore her and cried when she died. However rick's potrayal of Mythological characters is actually demeaning.
Don't start saying that- 'Oh, it's no problem, it's only mythology, no one is going to be hurt.'
It does. It hurts a lot of people.Imagine if an ancient Greek heard you. They'd be insulted and hurt.
Now, coming back to Helen. Y'know the Fan favorite Theseus? He kidnapped Helen when she was only twelve years old. Twelve. Feeling that she wasn't old enough to bang, he decided to keep her hostage , so that he could bang with her later. Pass me the bucket!!!!!
So, Helen gets put through this much crap and people call her a slut, instead of Paris, who was the one to kidnap her and don't even know that Theseus literally held a twelve year old Child as a sex toy.
And another person excessively blamed. Aphrodite. I've never seen anyone justifying the poor woman who wasn't to be blamed for many of the things she does and instead potray her in the fanfictions as someone who'll sleep with any hot guy. THIS IS NOT APHRODITE! SHE'S AN AWESOME GODDESS, JUST LIKE ARTEMIS , ATHENA , DEMETER AND HESTIA.
We'll have to explore Mythology now. feel free to pass.
Aphrodite was born out of Ouranous' genitals, which were ripped apart in the first place due to Kronos. Which means that she was born out of Conflict itself. And conflict is represented by Ares, the blood thirsty war god. This makes her the oldest olympian, far more older than the big three or even Hestia. While Aphrodite isn't the purest person out there, has many flaws, and is a very tempermental goddess and is very, very vain. she has many praiseworthy qualities
She's an overprotective momma. When Eros came to her with an injury, she took very good care of him and while her hate towards Psyche was mainly due to jealousy, she was very enraged that Psyche had hurt her son. She guides Aeneas throughout the founding of Rome, making her the mother of Rome. She also helps many people fall in love with the people they want to. And most importantly, she's the embodiment of Love. That makes her the most powerful goddess out there. Without love, you would be a heartless zombie. By Lily standing in front of Harry, to save him, she put a protection charm on him that lasted for seventeen years. Isn't that love? If Katniss hadn't volunteered for Prim, the Hunger Games wouldn't have happened. Isn't that Love? If Percy hadn't fallen into Tartarus for Annabeth, then the Doors of Death wouldn't have closed. Isn't that love? If Sally didn't sacrifice her happiness, would Percy have lived till twelve? Isn't that love?
So isn't love the most powerful force? Yes, it has its own shortcomings. It creates Jealousy, vanity and many other factors. Yet, you can't live without love.
Now coming back to the topic, Aphrodite is blamed for cheating on her husband. While what she did was cheating on Hepheastus, she has a valid reason. Aphrodite is most compatible with Ares. Aphrodite was born out of conflict. That means she's naturally compatible with Ares. They're both made for each other. While everyone ships AphroditexHepheastus, I ship AresxAphrodite since they both liked each other, are exact opposites, with Aphrodite representing the female and Ares with the Male and would've had a healthy relationship.
Hera is the one who suggests that they should marry Aphrodite to Hephaestus, fully knowing that since Hephaestus was ugly and mostly busy in his forges, anyone could bang with Aphrodite, Knowing that these were the exact reasons Aphrodite didn't like Hephaestus. Hera, You Bovine #%@! You made the cruellest thing possible, not only by forcing someone to marry a person they didn't like and denying your 'favorite son' the woman he had feelings for, but played with the emotions of your son, who was ugly because of ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!
And you know who gets the blame for all this? Aphrodite.
Again, she's blamed for the Trojan War, which is entirely Zeus' and Paris'. Zeus' for pushing off the decision to a sixteen year old mortal, cuz he was too chicken to choose who was the most beautiful. And Paris, out of sheer lust, chose Aphrodite. And who gets the blame for this? Aphrodite- when she indirectly helped in the founding of one of the Greatest empires in the world.
So, yeah, stop blaming Helen or Aphrodite for the Trojan War. It's not even .0000000000001% Helen's fault. TBH, she was the victim of too much sexual abuse. And don't bash Hercules or Aphrodite. It's poor potrayal in Rick's Part.
