Alexandria is the capital of the Alexandria Governorate and the second largest city and a major economic center in Egypt.

History[]

Alexandria was founded around a minor Ancient Egyptian town c. 331 BC by Alexander the Great (who gave the city its name). Upon his death, when Alexander's empire fragmented into a collection of "Successor Kingdoms" called the Diadochi, Ptolemy I Soter (Alexander's general) would found the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt (the heads of state would still be referred to as the Pharaoh of both the Upper and Lower Nile). Egypt would continue to be ruled under a Macedonian court until the time of the late Roman Republic, with the death of Cleopatra VII Philopator after the defeat of Marcus Antonius (Mark Anthony) and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. Egypt would be annexed as a Roman province, but would be specially administered by an Equestrian as opposed to a Senator (who usually ran Senatorial provinces). This was due to Egypt's importance as the "bread basket" of the Mediterranean. The special administration was set in place to counter the possibility of a member of the Senate from claiming Egypt as his own and breaking it off from the Republic, which would threaten the vital shipments of grain from Egypt to Rome. Egypt would remain under Roman control for about two-thirds of a millennium, retaining its status as a specially administered province when the Roman Republic became an Empire and eventually, would become a vital province part of the Eastern Roman Empire (later known after the fall of the Western Roman Empire as the Byzantine Empire) until the Muslims took the city in AD 641.

Hellenistic Alexandria was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its Great Library (once the largest in the ancient world until it was burnt to the ground); and the Necropolis. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. In Classical Antiquity, Alexandria was the second most powerful and most populated city of the ancient world after Rome, followed by Antioch.
