You must listen to me. Holding a grudge is dangerous for a child of Hades. It is our fatal flaw. You have to forgive. You have to promise me this.

–Bianca talking to her brother, Nico, in The Battle of the Labyrinth

Bianca di Angelo was a Greek demigod, a daughter of Hades and Maria di Angelo, and the older sister of Nico di Angelo. She became a Hunter of Artemis after being saved along with Percy Jackson, Grover Underwood, Thalia Grace, and her brother Nico by the Hunters. She later died (killed by one of Hephaestus' defective automatons, Talos) at the age of twelve and chose rebirth.

History

Early Life

Not much is known about Bianca's past. She and her brother, Nico, were born in Venice to Maria Di Angelo and Hades before World War II, so Hades never broke the oath he took with his brothers after the war to never have any more half-blood children. When she was eight, she, Nico and their mother went to Split, Croatia.

Death of Mother

Bianca and Nico both moved to Washington, D.C. at some point. When she and her brother were very little, their mother, Maria, died when Zeus struck the hotel they were staying in with lightning in an attempt to kill the siblings. However, they were protected by Hades as he erected an impenetrable wall of black energy to shield them from Zeus's bolt; Hades was not able to protect their mother in time. Afterward, a devastated Hades ordered the Fury Alecto to take Nico and Bianca to the Underworld and bathe them in the River Lethe, in order to wipe their memories.

Washington D.C. and the Lotus Hotel

In The Titan's Curse, Bianca recalled that shortly after she and Nico had their memories wiped, they were returned to Washington D.C. and told by a lawyer (Alecto in disguise) that their parents were dead, and had left a bank trust for them. This "lawyer" would come by once in a while to check on both of them. During this time, Nico and Bianca were enrolled in a boarding school. In The Blood of Olympus, Nico sees a brief flashback from this time - his sister Bianca, laughing as she pulled him across the National Mall. After some time had passed, Hades, hoping that one of his children might one day become the "child of the Eldest Gods" (referred to in the Great Prophecy), decided to place them in the Lotus Hotel and Casino, and tasked Alecto with the job. Once again disguised as a lawyer, Alecto had Nico and Bianca leave the boarding school, and took them all the way to the Lotus Hotel, in Las Vegas.

Life in the Twenty-First Century

After what the siblings thought was a month in the Lotus Hotel (which was actually approximately 60 years), they were taken out by Alecto, this time disguised as a different lawyer. Alecto drove Nico and Bianca back east, through D.C., and then up into Maine. They were brought to a military school called Westover Hall, paid for by Hades using what Nico and Bianca thought to be a trust fund left to them by their parents. It was later revealed that Nico had been obsessed with pirates even before he started collecting Mythomagic cards. In The Titan's Curse, Bianca mentioned that the summer before she left Westover Hall (during the events of The Lightning Thief), she and Nico visited Washington D.C. once again, and were very surprised to see several subway stations that had not been there before; she later mentions that during their visit, several monsters (disguised as mortals) attempted to attack them in an alley. Nico also mentions seeing a bus driver with ram's horns (most likely a satyr in disguise), though Bianca had not believed him at the time.

In The House of Hades, Nico mentions that Bianca was the only one who always accepted him. This most likely means that Bianca knew about her brother being gay.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

The Titan's Curse

Bianca was a half-blood of unknown parentage (but it was realized after they figured out Nico's parent). After being rescued from Dr. Thorn by Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Thalia Grace, and Artemis, Bianca made the decision to become a Hunter of Artemis (unknowingly removing herself as one of the possible subjects of The Great Prophecy). Bianca showed signs during the quest of being a child of Hades when she was able to slay some of the skeletal warriors easily when the others were unable to.

Talos Prototype

The prototype of Talos that killed her.

Bianca later joined the quest to apprentice under Zoë Nightshade. It is later mentioned in The Blood of Olympus, that Bianca gave Nico a silver skull ring shortly before departing on the quest. She stopped to pick up a Mythomagic figurine of Hades, which, according to her, was the only statue that Nico doesn't possess. However, as the other quest members have warned, removing an item from the Junkyard of the Gods caused a malfunctioning Talos robot to attack them. Bianca went inside the machine to stop it, but in the process crashed the robot into some power lines. Percy tried to stop her, telling her that he should do it instead, but Bianca said that it was her responsibility, as she picked up the statue. Percy, Grover, Thalia, and Zoë searched for her from when the incident ended until dawn, but they never found her. After finding no trace of Bianca, Percy, Grover, Thalia, and Zoë claimed that she was dead. When Nico learned of her death, he blamed Percy. He believed Percy had let her die despite promising not to let Bianca be harmed. Nico fled from Camp Half-Blood, and Percy discovered in the process that the di Angelos' are children of Hades.

Percy later finds out that Bianca is sending him Iris-messages so he could see what Nico and the ghost King Minos were up to after Nico had fled Camp Half-Blood.

Later, Bianca comes back as a ghost, through a ritual performed by Nico who was persuaded by King Minos. She explains to Nico that her death wasn't Percy's fault and there was nothing he could have done to help, as she made the fatal decision herself. She also tells him he must forgive Percy, as holding grudges is the fatal flaw for children of Hades. This allows her brother to make amends with Percy, and ensure he is on the gods' side for the war.

The Demigod Files

Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades

Thalia Grace mentions the fallen huntress when seeing Nico after over a year. She is later mentioned by Percy when meeting with Melinoe, saying he has accepted her death and moved on along with Lee Fletcher and Zoë Nightshade.

The Last Olympian

Bianca appears to Nico when he tries to summon their mother's spirit. She warns Nico not to summon their mother; explaining that she is the one ghost he is not allowed to summon and that she has been hidden by Hades due to his grief over her death. Instead of summoning her, Nico sees a memory from his early childhood, where Maria was killed by Zeus in an attempt to get to the children.

Nico mentioned to his half-sister Hazel Levesque that Bianca chose to be reborn, presumably trying for three rebirths and three selections for Elysium, so that she could earn entry into the Isles of the Blest. Nico was devastated by this, as he was trying to sneak her out of the Underworld, and no one would have noticed because Death had been captured. Instead of sneaking Bianca out, he snuck out Hazel for her second chance at life.

The House of Hades

While in Italy with Hazel and Frank, Nico mentioned that he and Bianca came there once with their mother, Maria di Angelo when he was six.

The Blood of Olympus

Nico sees a memory of him and Bianca walking along the great canal in Venice during their childhood.

Personality

Zoe Nightshade

Zoe Nightshade, who convinced her to join the Hunters of Artemis.

Bianca was quiet and shy, and loved her brother Nico, but disliked caring for him all the time. Thus, she was relieved to be able to be her own person when she joined the Hunters of Artemis. Bianca got along well with Percy Jackson, though he was angry when she joined the Hunters instead of coming to Camp Half-Blood, as this made him feel as if losing Annabeth Chase had been for no reason at all. Percy also believed Bianca was also being selfish with Nico. However, Percy later forgives Bianca when she explains she she joined the Hunters so she could live her own life and felt Camp Half Blood would be safe for Nico, for she believed that there are a lot of people like Percy there. Bianca and Nico both have their father's habit of gesturing with their hands while talking and when they are on edge.

Fatal flaw

Bianca di Angelo's fatal flaw may have been holding grudges, like Nico. After her death, Bianca says that holding grudges are the demigod children of Hades' fatal flaw. In The Last Olympian, Nico tells his father that he (Hades), is holding a grudge that could end up killing the Olympians and the campers. Bianca's flaw may also be a strong bond with those she loves, such as her brother. This may be because Bianca was killed because she picked up a metal figurine of Hades, the only Mythomagic figure Nico didn't have, an act of misplaced sibling love.

Relationships

Friends

Percy Jackson was disappointed when Bianca joined the Hunt and felt personally responsible for her death, showing that he cared for her a great deal. Percy also stated that he liked talking to Bianca as she was much more laid back than Zoë.

Zoë Nightshade invited Bianca to join the Hunt and believed that Bianca had the ability to replace her as first lieutenant someday. Zoë cried when Bianca died, blaming herself for choosing an amateur Hunter for a suicide mission.

Family

Growing up, Bianca and Nico were extremely close, and Bianca practically raised her younger brother. Nico was heartbroken when Bianca left him to join the Hunt and later tried to bring her back several times after she died, finally giving up when she chose rebirth. Nico said that Bianca was the only one who ever accepted him, suggesting that she knew about him being gay.

Bianca's relationship with her mother is unknown as Maria died when she and Nico were very young, and Hades had them taken to the Lethe to have their memories wiped.

Before Bianca died, Hades had originally hoped that she would be the hero of the first Great Prophecy. Later on, he frequently told Nico that his sister would have done a better job than him, showing that he favored Bianca over Nico. Though Hades and Nico managed to build a better relationship in time, and Bianca later choose rebirth, she remained an extremely difficult subject between her father and brother.

Appearance

Hades, her father

I was amazed at how different she looked after just a few days with the Hunters. Her dark hair was braided, so you could actually see her face. She had a splash of freckles across her nose, and her dark eyes reminded me of someone famous, but I couldn't think who.

Percy thinking about Bianca in The Titan's Curse.

Bianca is said to look like her mother. She had black eyes that are like her father's, which gleamed with either madness or genius and silky dark hair. She was lean and about a little shorter than average height. She had olive skin and used to wear a floppy green hat that hid her face. She gained the silvery aura all Hunters have after she pledged herself to Artemis, and didn't hide behind her hat anymore. She pulled her hair back into a braid like the other huntresses. Her skin glowed silvery, because of her being a Hunter. Percy said that she had her mother's smile when he saw a memory of Maria di Angelo during The Last Olympian.

Abilities

  • ADHD: Like most demigods, Bianca possessed inborn supernatural battle reflexes and senses that she used to analyze the fighting style of her opponent.
  • Dyslexia: Bianca's brain was "hard-wired" for divine Ancient Greek instead of modern languages.
  • Italian: In The House of Hades, Nico shows that he can speak fluent Italian, so she could, most likely, speak it as well.

  • Necromancy: As a daughter of Hades, Bianca was able to control the dead.
    • Summon and banish the dead.
    • Destroy Skeleton Warriors.
    • Communicate telepathically with ghosts.
    • She could command the dead to follow her authority, as seen during The Battle of the Labyrinth.
    • Release souls.
    • Turn people into ghosts.
    • Sense death.
    • Physically touch ghosts.
    • Summon ghosts from the dead.
  • Osteokinesis: As a daughter of Hades, Bianca could control bones of skeletons.
    • She could summon bones.
  • Geokinesis: As a daughter of Hades, Bianca could control and manipulate the earth. [1]

  • Immortality, unless she died in battle or falls in love.
  • Superhuman accuracy and hunting skills like running, jumping, stealth, etc.
  • She was naturally stronger and faster than an average mortal, demigod, or nymph.
  • She usually had the upper hand in battle because of her fighting powers.
  • She could summon her bow and arrows whenever she needs them.
  • She had excellent aim with her bow and arrows.
  • She could talk to wild animals, mainly wolves, an animal of Artemis.

  • Etymology

Bianca means "White" in Italian, referring to her father's albino-like skin. Her surname "Di Angelo" means "Of the angel".[1][2] From this, her full name means "White of the angel" or simply "White angel."

Her name and her brother Nico's name, incidentally, mirror the name "Bianca and Nico", a show that is aired on Baby TV.

    Trivia

    • In The House of Hades, Nico mentions that Bianca was the only one who accepted him. This most likely suggests that Bianca knew about Nico being gay.
    • It was revealed in The Blood of Olympus, that the silver skull ring worn by Nico was a gift from Bianca, her last gift to him.
    • Bianca, Nico, and Thalia are the only Greek half-bloods of the Big Three whose ageing has been tampered with by their godly parent.
    • Bianca is the only known demigod to die on their first quest.
    • Bianca has been in the River Lethe twice: Once as a child with her brother on orders of Hades to keep them safe, and once in death so she could be reborn.
    • Another likely reason why Bianca chose to be reborn would be to ensure that Nico could never be tempted or manipulated into trying to restore her to life again, which is exactly what he tried to do in The Battle of the Labyrinth, which was also mentioned in Son of Neptune
    • Bianca is the first known child of Hades on the series. Her parentage helped her defeat the skeletons, while no one else could even harm them.
