Yeah, I remember your lectures. Our plans are madness, blah-blah. But the Aronnax is operational now and Harding-Pencroft is gone, so maybe you were the crazy one to leave us, huh?

–Caleb South, in Daughter of the Deep

Caleb South is a senior student at Land Institute, the rival school of Harding-Pencroft Academy.

Daughter of the Deep[]

Caleb is a part of the crew of the Aronnax and he attacks Ana Dakkar, injecting her with a hypodermic needle laced with sea snake venom. Caleb holds Ana in a chokehold and threatens to end Ana's life if her crew attacks him. Gemini Twain managed to land a shot, making both of them tumble overboard, however they climb back on the Varuna and keep her as hostage again as Caleb and Dave struggle to get the engines going. Before they could take her, Ana mumbles to catch Caleb's attention. When he leans forward she slams her skull against him, breaking his nose and freeing herself.

Instead of letting Caleb drown, they retrieve him out of the water for interrogation. He is zip-tied against a metal folding chair with a pink duck inflatable, HP's signature form of punishment. On Hewett's orders, Caleb reveals the Aronnax's mission was to send them to their deaths and to capture Ana alive. Caleb mocks HP's goals and mistakes. Rather than being executed, Caleb is thrown overboard and left to float in the ocean.

Later, however, Caleb manages to return to the ranks of the Aronnax and announces to the Nautilus that they should all give up and surrender. The Nautilus eventually wins the fight against them however. Caleb and the other Ll's are kept at Lincoln Base and are afterwards sent off aboard the Varuna with plenty of supplies and food.

Appearance[]

Caleb wears a wet-suit, with a mask and hood. He has close-set brown eyes and a wedge of blond hair tinged green from chlorine. He ended up breaking his nose, which ended up swelling, and blood crusts his upper lip.

Personality[]

Caleb, like the rest in his school, is vicious. He believes that the alt-tech HP was keeping should belong to them and should more directly influence the world, instead of being locked up private. Caleb sounded disappointed and regretful at their lack of collaboration. He was willing to take matters in his own hands by killing and plundering if it meant bringing glory to Land Institute. Caleb feels disdain towards his former professor, who he claimed made false promises to them.
