Harding-Pencroft are not our friends, Ana. They're hoarding our family's inheritance for generations. Their stupidity got our parents killed. They're using you. Land Institute gave me command of their prize ship. They want to use our tech to make the world better. Harding-Pencroft would never. They refused to even let me see the Nautilus. This was the only way to force their hand. I'm sorry, but it had to be done. Now we can take what is ours. Yours and mine.

–Dev Dakkar, in Daughter of the Deep

Dev Dakkar is the brother of Ana Dakkar and the descendant of Captain Nemo. He was a senior at Harding-Pencroft Academy and the Shark House prefect, but eventually allied to Land Institute. He formerly dated Amelia Leahy.

History[]

Dev was born to a pair of marine biologists as the older sibling of his sister Ana. During his time in HP, he was told of his family's history. Dev was eager to be the Dakkar who would reclaim their family's legacy, but was kept from Nemo's Nautilus and was made to wait for four more years after he finished college.

Eventually, two years after his sister enrolled in HP, their parents were killed on a school-funded expedition. This, and the fact HP refused to show his family's tech, convinced Dev to secretly join the forces of Land Institute.

Daughter of the Deep[]

Appearance[]

Dev's dark hair is styled with a spike at the front resembling an urchin. His hairstyle is what the girls called "adorable", though Ana describes it as the result of sleeping with a pillow on his face. Dev usually wears his standard black HP wetsuit, which is emblazoned with the silver Shark logo at the front. He has a lopsided squint when grinning.

Personality[]

Dev initially appears as optimistic, reliable, and annoyingly cheerful towards his younger sister, Ana. Later on however, it is revealed Dev had hidden his bitter feelings about his parent's deaths from her. Dev's hatred led to him destroying HP and its students in an obsession to reclaim what he saw as rightfully his. It is described in the book that Sharks aim without thinking, which is a trait Dev exhibits. Most of his tactics are centered around offense rather than defense.

Towards the end, despite all he went through Dev does display signs of remorse, at least to his sister Ana.

Trivia[]

  • Dev can be considered the first antagonist of a Rick Riordan book to have actual blood relations with the protagonist. While other main antagonists are related to the main characters in other books; Kronos and Gaia being Percy Jackson's grandfather and great-grandmother respectively, Loki being the father to Samirah "Sam" al-Abbas and mother to Alex Fierro, and Nero being a descendent of Apollo, Ana and Dev are actual siblings without the relationship of gods or goddesses connecting them.
