Forums: Index > Consensus > Abandon Ship!: The New User Conundrum

We have a problem. It's subtle, but it's there. I've talked to some admins who agree with me on this, and have heard this alluded too a lot recently.. Recently, we've been getting new users, but almost all of them leave immediatley. At the same time, we have been losing users to inactivity, and we've reached a point where we have about 15 users who consistently log on. So here's my question: how do we keep new users? Personally, I think some users aren't as entertained with editing pages, and are looking for more to do on the site. There are a lot of ways we could think of to keep more new users, and we should use this page to brainstorm. One idea would be to think of more "fun," for lack of a better word, things to do, like Antaeus Arena. Maybe I'm looking too much into this, but if not, I think we should consider some ideas, even if we don't end up using them. Template:Frodo Sig

I don't see anything unusual in this lack of activity and active users. It is clear that we get the most activity when a book, graphic novel, movie, etc. is released. We tend to have less activity during the periods in between that sort of releases. If you look at the wiki stats, nothing seems out of normal as at the moment there isn't much going on in the Percy Jackson world, making a decline in activity evident and hard to thwart.
As to making new users stay a bit longer, when we did not have the blog request rule, I think regular users were more active as they were able to express their opinions, theories, etc. more freely and without what could be considered rather confusing procedures (especially to those who don't/haven't read the wiki rules). Antaeus' Arena is a great way of making the wiki experience more fun to regular users and we should promote it a bit more (e.g. on the main page). I actually started the monthly polls and the "Featured Wikian" section on the main page in the sole goal of making registered users have more fun and to compensate for the (dramatic) decrease in the number of new blogs on the wiki.
So, in short, we need to come up with more of these fun activities, as editing article pages and commenting on the same blog posts over and over again (understandably) gets tedious after a while. If anyone has new ideas, we as admins should be open to them. Furthermore, we could even make a blog post asking the users themselves what kind of new things they would like to see happen on the wiki in the future. Lies Borean. I'm the one who suggested we do Featured Wikian. You just made the actual thing. e.e SayuriDarling ~ And she tried to survive living her life on her own. 17:27, February 7, 2013 (UTC)
I never said that the idea came from me. I just did it because it was a good idea. Hyperborean ( Le travail n'épouvante que les âmes faibles.) |  17:41,2/7/2013
