“ | Gale does not like hearing about non-believers and con artists. She herself was once a witch, you see. | ” |
–Hecate to Hazel, in The House of Hades |
Gale is a polecat. She was once a human witch, but was turned into a polecat by the goddess Hecate. She appears in The House of Hades as a pet of Hecate.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Gale was once a mortal witch. According to Hecate, when Gale was still mortal, she had terrible personal hygiene and extreme digestive issues. This, along with her disagreeable personality, prompted the goddess Hecate to turn her into a polecat. After seeing Gale's memories, Percy Jackson realizes that the goddess had actually transformed her out of empathy: Gale was a very powerful and talented witch who was feared for her talents and Hecate had lacked faith that Gale could survive on those talents alone.
The Heroes of Olympus[]
The House of Hades[]

Hecate, her owner
Hazel Levesque first catches a glimpse of Gale during her visit of a ruined temple, along with the goddess Hecate and the Labrador, Hecuba (former queen of Troy). Hazel mistakenly identifies her as a weasel, but she is corrected by the Hecate who tells her she is a polecat. According to the goddess, Gale does not like to hear about con artists and nonbelievers in magic, which intimidates Hazel as she knew the goddess was referring to her mother, Marie Levesque.
Gale joins The Seven's journey and Hazel's fight with Pasiphaë. When the sorceress is defeated by Hazel and the goddess Hecate, Gale leaves with Hecate.
The Senior Year Adventures[]
Wrath of the Triple Goddess[]
When Hecate goes away for a week to bask in what she believes is worship, the goddess enlists the help of Percy Jackson to watch her and Hecuba. They feed Gale a chicken carcass twice a day and walk her. The following day, she and Hecuba escape after Grover drinks a potion and goes on a rampage. Soon she is found by Filomena, Silbe, Phaedra, and Daedra and enslaved by the sisters, forced into work at their various perfume shops. She is soon by Percy, Grover, and Annabeth Chase. After Percy and his friends are effected by Beasts Breath and the building starts to cave in due to spilled potions, she hides in a vent and Percy, with octopus tentacles for arms, goes over to her. He says he will not try to stop her if she chooses to leave, but asks that she help him find a cure. He manages to take hold of Riptide and holds Gale still. In doing so, Percy sees the memory of Hecate turning Gale into a polecat to save her from the ill effects of her work to resurrect a girl, as well as Gale being chased out of town. The son of Poseidon realizes Hecate transformed Gale as a gesture of pity and envy and tells her so. He frees Gale and she instructs him in brewing a possible cure as the damage worsens. As they work, Percy is getting used to controlling his tentacles. They finish just as the the room collapses and, taking the potion, make it to the sidewalk. The twins mourn the loss of their life's work just as Emergency Services arrive and Percy leaves with his friends as the twins swear vengeance. Gale goes with them. The group shelters in an alley and Percy shows them the potion, which has formed into three blobs. When Grover and Annabeth are cured, Percy looks between the last blob and Gale. Grover translates that it is only enough for one, and that the ingredients are hard to come by. Percy tries to get Gale to take it, but she insists the son of Poseidon takes it, as long as he takes to Hecate about getting her own lab and assistance to help her brew potions. Percy takes the last of the cure and, after reverting back, tells everyone to head back to the manse.
When she returns, she and Hecuba greet each other. When Percy considers using Hecate's torches to rebuild the house, Gale suggests she do research on ways to control the ghosts as Grover assists her. After a plan is formed, Gale makes a paste to protect the others from ghosts for a limited time. They then make their way to St. Mark's Church. After the ghosts have been summoned and convinced to help, they move out. When Annabeth struggles after a block, Percy takes over. She urges him to hurry as they reach the manse and watches as the demigods share the torches and rebuild the manse. However, Percy collapses from exhaustion and drops the torch. Annabeth picks it up the torch and keeps the ghosts at bay as Gale gets the demigods some nectar. After some of the ghosts possess mortal, she and the others pets help Grover keep them at bay as Percy takes care of the ghosts not possessing people. Once the ghosts vanish, everyone enjoys the party. She speaks with Juniper about Alchemy.
In the morning, Hecate returns and she and Hecuba greet the goddess. After Percy reveals the truth of the past week to Hecate, Hecuba and Gale urge him to request more freedom from the goddess as he promised.
