“ | Kill you? That's an absolutely baseless accusation. My sister only did as you requested. She asked your permission to raise the chair. | ” |
–Gjalp, on trying to kill Magnus and his friends, in the Sword of Summer |
Gjalp is a giantess, the daughter of the Jotunn Geirrod, and the sister of Greip and an unnamed giantess.
Appearance[]
Gjalp was described to be 'dolled up for a girl's night out' with stringy pigtails and a face hideously smudged with makeup. Like her sister Gjalp wears size 120 leather dresses, sandals, and a Flintstones-style necklace made from boulders.
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard[]
The Sword of Summer[]
Magnus and Samirah, on a quest from Thor to retrieve his hammer, discover the frost giantesses in the palace of Geirrod. They quickly claim guest rights to avoid getting killed. However, Gjalp and her sister try to kill them subtly by raising them on their seat and trying to crush them to death on the ceiling.
When their attempts to kill prove to be a failure, they agree to grant them Thor's weapon, on the condition they receive Sumarbrander. Magnus refuses this offer and slips a hint that they had ended up killing their sister earlier. This outrages Gjalp and her sister who try to attack, but Griep is slain when Jack flies up her nasal cavity. When Gjalp tries to cover her own nose Magnus launches a steak knife at her chest, which allowed access for Jack. A second later she lay on the floor, dead.
Trivia[]
- In the old stories she and her sister were killed by the thunder god Thor.
- The name Gjálp can translated as 'screamer', 'yelper' in Old Norse. It is perhaps related to the Icelandic word gjálp ('roar; sea, wave'), and also to gjalpa, which means ('to brag').
