I should have crushed you like bugs! Curse my lack of a stool and strategically placed ceiling spikes!

–Greip, in the the Sword of Summer

Greip is a giantess, daughter of the Jotunn Geirrod, and the sister of Gjalp and an unnamed giantess.

Appearance[]

Greip and her sister are both in party attire. They wore sandals, size 120 leather dresses, and Flintstones-style necklaces made from polished boulders. Greip has stringy black hair, which was woven into pigtails. Her gray face was painted hideously with lipstick and rouge.

The Sword of Summer[]

Magnus and Samirah first encounter Griep and her sister Gjalp in Geirrod's palace, where they went to retrieve Thor's hammer Mjolnir. They are first seen guarding Gunilla, who was trapped in the form of a swan.

As soon as they enter Magnus and Sam quickly claim guest rights to prevent the two giantesses from killing them directly, although the daughters of Geirrod still attempt to kill them in more subtle ways, such as trying to raise the chair Magnus and Sam are on into the ceiling so that they will get crushed to death.

Afterwards, the twin giantesses try to barter for Jack in exchange for Thor's Staff. Magnus refuses and throws Jack into Griep and Gjalp's nasal cavities which scrambles their brains and kills them altogether. When their father finds them on the floor he assumes they had simply passed out drunk.

Trivia[]

  • In Norse mythology Greipp and her sister Gjalp were slain by Thor himself. [1]
  • Greipa roughly means ('gripper, grasper'). It derives from the Old Norse word greip somewhat meaning ('hand [with spread thumbs], handle').
