A holographic scroll is means of communication developed by Leo Valdez and later shared with the Romans.

Description[]

The holographic scroll appears to take two forms with the first being a recorded holographic message on a piece of parchment which is then delivered to the recipient for their viewing. This message can be viewed multiple times.

The second is a more direct form of communication, presumably between two such scrolls. This version displays a miniature hologram of the person on either end, allowing them to communicate with each other in real time.

The Heroes of Olympus[]

The Son of Neptune[]

Reyna Ramírez-Arellano shows Percy Jackson a holographic scroll containing a message from Leo Valdez revealing the imminent arrival of the Argo II in New Rome.

The Mark of Athena[]

It's mentioned that Annabeth Chase had Leo Valdez send the holographic scroll, which is one of his special inventions, to give the Romans a heads up that the Argo II is coming.

Between the Series[]

A few days after his death and resurrection, Leo Valdez sends Camp Half-Blood a holographic scroll containing a message revealing his survival and successful rescue of Calypso. However, nothing else is heard from Leo for the next six months and Nico di Angelo hangs onto the scroll, often viewing Leo's message.

Following the end of the Second Giant War and peace between the Greeks and Romans, the Greeks evidently share the technology with the Romans who adopt it for their own use for communications.

Due to Triumvirate Holdings using the soundless god Harpocrates to block all forms of demigod communications, holographic scrolls stop working alongside all other methods of communication such as Iris Messages. Leo later reveals that he had tried to send more scroll messages, but the blackout had prevented them from working.

The Trials of Apollo[]

The Hidden Oracle[]

When the now-mortal Apollo arrives at Camp Half-Blood six months after the defeat of Gaea, Will Solace and Nico di Angelo show him the scroll containing Leo Valdez's message.

After returning to camp, Leo mentions that he and Calypso had tried to send more scrolls, but they had failed to work because of the communications blackout.

The Tyrant's Tomb[]

After Harpocrates is convinced to fade, Reyna has Apollo retrieve a holographic scroll from the glove compartment of their truck. Apollo is able to use it to contact Frank Zhang briefly for Reyna to update Frank on their success. However, the connection is spotty and the scroll ends up bursting into flames. Reyna theorizes that they overheated it and that the communication disruption must be slowly breaking up and working its way out from Sutro Tower.

The Tower of Nero[]

It's mentioned that although demigod communications have now been restored, they remain spotty.

The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure[]

Nico di Angelo mentions getting Leo's message following his resurrection and how Will Solace helped him to let out his rage after he got it.
