|Not Part of Riordanverse|
At one point, James married a fellow witch named Euhna and had a daughter with her, Hattie. Soon after they adopted a girl from the excommunicated Horangi clan and told her her birthday parents were teenage saram, non-magical, people and named her Riley. they persuaded the elders to have her elemental affiliations looked at and all four were fire, with elements only repeating once it was unheard of, and Riley was forbidden from practicing magic.
One Saturday, about a month before his daughter Hattie is to try to receive her Gi bracelet, he meets a new commer to Los Angeles named Robert Choi and reassures Riley that she is his daughter and treats his injured ankle. Later during services at temple, which they are late to, they watch as one of the elder's granddaughter has her elemental affiliation revealed, and are warned about an exiled clan trying to get back into the congregation.
Two days later on Hattie's thirteenth birthday, she watches with her husband and Riley as Hattie completes her initiation. She and her husband then watch in shock as their daughters perform a power sharing ritual. After the truth of Riley being a Horangi gets out, he and his family are given a choice, either all of them are stripped of their power and excommunicated or just Riley is banished. After James and his wife discover a letter their daughter's note about summoning Mago Hamli, they try desperately to contact Hattie and Riley to no avail.
A couple of days later, he, his wife, and Okja have a Samjogo track her down and they go to the Horangi hideout and Emmett fills them in when he sees them. He and his wife hug Riley and accuse the Horangi of kidnapping and brainwashing her. When Riley accuses Okja of a coverup, she reveals her suspicions of the Samjogo elder, Bongjoon Pyo, framing the Horangi due to recent erratic behavior and the group form an uneasy alliance and head for Los Angeles. They arrive at Mr. Pyo's place of work and, after Taeyo hacks into his calendar to make an appointment for his relatives, they walk right in. They find him in a meeting and, when he sees them, runs as they give chase. They corner him in his car as Sora, Austin, and Taeyo subdue him. Riley asks why he framed the Horangi. Mr.Pyo tells them Sookhee Harrison was behind everything before he comes to the realization that she was possessed by the Cave Bear Goddess as part of a plan for her and her sisters to destroy the artifacts, which are actually pieces of the dark moon and dark sun, to erase their sin so that they can enter the Mortalrealm and do what they please with humanity. After realizing the Cave Bear Goddess can possess members of the Gom, Riley asks if they can sever the clan's ties to her. Although hesitant at first, Okja reveals a spell exists and the he and his wife agree to it. Just then Areum arrives and says the Dokkaebi know where the artifact is. As they question where to even find a dokkaebi, Mr. Pyo says one lives in the forty-fourth room on the forty-forth floor of the temple. They leave the elder behind and, after stopping at the Tokki elder's house for a sleeping potion, they reach the temple and argue over who is going to make a deal with the dokkaebi. When they reach the room, the decide on the Ohs going in. As her mother drinks the potion, she falls asleep as he and Riley watch over her. Ten minutes later, his wakes up crying saying the goblin would get the star in exchange for the life of one of her daughters, something she couldn’t do as he comforts her.
The others enter the room and, as Riley had their memories of her erased to find the last fallen star, they do not recognize her and are surprised that she knows about their plan to sever the Gom from the Cave Bear Goddess. After she returns Emmett's ring and takes out Taeyo's compass, she believes it is the last fallen star and they head to the Gi Sanctuary. The Cave Bear Goddess arrives and asks Riley for the star. She then requests Hattie and the goddess obliges. James, Eunha, and Riley hug Hattie, who is incredibly thin with a gray hue to her skin. Suddenly Hattie starts to spasm before speaking in the voice of Sookhee Harrison. After she explains to her son what she did and how she regained her sense of self, she turns into a jaguar and goes to the afterlife. Riley berates the goddess for not returning Hattie, the goddess responds that, as she and the other goddesses are the daughters of Mago Halmi, all others are beneath them. Okra then starts the spell to sever the goddess from a Gom, binding the two with thread. Riley goes to cut off threads, but fails to do so as she realizes to late that the compass is not the star. As the Cave Bear Goddess berates Riley, for betraying her, Riley says she is powerless in the Mortalrealm without a host. Just then the goddess tries to possess Okja. He and the others try and fail to stop the goddess. The goddess sends him flying into the Gom pews as his wife rushes over to him to heal him. The two heal Areum when she uses herself as a shield to protect Riley. He and the others are shocked when Riley reveals she is the last fallen star and watch as his forgotten daughter destroys the statue of his clan's patron goddess, expelling her from Okja and the Mortalrealm.
As things calm down, he and Eunha thank Riley for returning their daughter to them. As they continue to mourn, Riley is given a wish by the Haetae to undo anything from her past and she decides to resurrect Hattie. He does so and, after a delay, Hattie is resurrected. They all cheer and promise to find a way to restore their memories of Riley as they fill Hattie in.
