“ | Do you think you're special, Lightning Thief? Do you think you cannot be replaced? I gave you the tools to steal the Master Bolt, only to watch it taken from you. That mistake has been corrected. But there is too much at stake for you to fail me again. The war ahead of us. The war beyond Zeus and Poseidon's war. Give me reason to question your worthiness again, and there is another that just might be ready to take your place. Isn't that right, little hero? Not time for us to meet quite yet. Run along now. And show me what you are capable of. | ” |
–Kronos, in "We Take a Zebra to Vegas" |
Kronos (also spelled as Cronus and Cronos) is the Titan god of Time, Evil, and Harvest. He was the King of the Titans, the most powerful child of Gaea, the brother-husband of Rhea, and the father of the six Elder Olympians.
History[]
The First Titanomachy[]
All six of Kronos' divine children eventually declared war against their father and other Titans, which resulted in the terrifying eleven-year-long Titanomachy. Zeus proceeded to take his father's scythe and slice him into a thousand pieces just as the Titan Lord had done to his own father, before casting him into Tartarus.
Manipulating Luke[]
At some point, Kronos made contact with Luke Castellan, the bitter demigod son of Hermes. Using Luke's anger at the gods, Kronos was able to manipulate the demigod into doing his bidding, giving Luke the tools that he needed to steal the Helm of Darkness and the Master Bolt and intervening when Ares caught him. Kronos plotted to use the theft to spark a war between Zeus and Poseidon in order to weaken his children before Kronos would launch his own war to reclaim his throne.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (TV series)[]
Season One[]
"I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher"[]
In a dream, Percy sees Kronos in the form of a cloaked figure holding a lantern on the beach at Montauk during a storm. Kronos asks who Percy is and, calling him so weak, scared and sad, orders Percy to run away before he gets hurt.
"I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom"[]
In a dream, Kronos appears again to Percy, this time in a seemingly endless desert, noting that "he" had left Percy here with nothing. Stating that he knows how Percy feels, Kronos is aware that Percy wants what's been taken from him and justice. The sand nearby falls into a pit to Tartarus and Percy falls in before waking up from the dream.
"I Plunge to My Death"[]
In a dream, Percy, in the form of his younger self, desperately calls out for his mother in the desert. Kronos greets Percy, asking with amusement what sort of trouble he's up to now. Kronos warns him that "a forbidden child attracts attention. A forbidden hero? Well... They attract doom. She is coming." During Kronos' warning, the sand falls into a pit to Tartarus behind Percy.
"A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers"[]
Ares mentions how, years before he was born, Kronos ate his children.
"We Take a Zebra to Vegas"[]
In a dream, Percy witnesses Kronos in the form of his old headmaster discussing his plans with the real Lightning Thief. Kronos reveals that starting a war between Zeus and Poseidon is just the beginning of his plans before he notices Percy spying on them.
"We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of"[]
When Percy and Grover near the entrance to Tartarus, the Winged Shoes attempts to pull Grover in, but Percy is able to brace them both until the shoes come off and fly into Tartarus. Moments later, Percy finds the Master Bolt in the backpack that Ares had given to them, revealing that Ares was involved in the theft.
After Hades reveals that his Helm of Darkness was stolen and he had nothing to do with the theft of the Master Bolt, Percy realizes that Kronos was the true culprit. Kronos has the longest grudge of them all because Zeus took Kronos' throne, meaning that Kronos has the biggest reason to weaken Zeus so that he can take Zeus' throne back. Kronos is in a million pieces at the bottom of Tartarus, the same place that something had tried to drag Percy and Grover into the moment that the Master Bolt had appeared in Percy's bag. Tartarus is also the place that Percy has been hearing a voice in his dreams telling him that he needs to help it take down Olympus. While Percy had thought that it was Hades, having now met the god, Percy knows that the voice definitely wasn't him. Considering this, Hades suggests that Percy ask him for sanctuary because if Kronos really is planning to somehow emerge from his exile and Percy was his first call, then Percy's not safe. Hades promises to protect Percy, Sally and even Grover, but he must turn over the Master Bolt in exchange. While Hades doesn't want the bolt, he needs it now to be prepared in case war with Kronos really is coming. Hades tells Percy that this only ends one way, and the only question is how difficult Percy makes it, unknowingly echoing Sally's words to her son from years before. Staring at his mother for a moment, Percy refuses and he instead accepts Hades' first offer: Percy and Grover are going to get Hades' helm back and he will release Sally when they return with it. Telling Sally to hold fast, Percy and Grover use the pearls to escape.
"The Prophecy Comes True"[]
Kronos visits Percy in a dream. Kronos promises he and Percy will see each other in person one day and that his survival is essential for the Titan king's return.
Appearance[]
In Percy's dreams, Kronos mainly takes on the form of a cloaked figure holding a lantern, although the Titan Lord once took on the form of the Yancy Academy Headmaster.
Personality[]
Kronos is cruel and manipulative.
Abilities[]
As the son of Gaea and Ouranos, the Titan King of Mount Othrys and the father of the Big Three, Kronos is the most powerful Titan of all.
Relationships[]
Percy Jackson[]
Kronos is shown to take an immediate interest in the young demigod who, according to Kronos, is the key to the Titan King's return. Kronos appears to Percy several times in his dreams, taunting the demigod and attempting to entice the son of Poseidon to his side. After figuring out Kronos' identity, Percy takes to calling him Grandpa - as Kronos is his paternal grandfather - much to Sally Jackson's annoyance.
Trivia[]
- In Kronos' initial appearances, he's credited simply as Voice in Dream.
- In "We Take a Zebra to Vegas," Kronos is credited as Headmaster.
