Laverna is the Roman minor goddess of thieves, cheats and liars.
The Nico di Angelo Adventures[]
The Court of the Dead[]
Working for Pirithous, Tantalus and Mary Tudor, Laverna breaks into Camp Jupiter abducting Arielle and Quinoa on two separate nights, avoiding detection by both the Twelfth Legion Fulminata and Terminus.
On the third night, the legion attempts to set a trap for her, but Laverna creates a distraction in twenty different locations, puts Yazan and Hazel Levesque to sleep, and abducts Asterion. Finding Hazel's tessera Iris Message bracelet, Laverna briefly speaks over it, accusing Hazel of interference with an officer of the court, before leaving.
On the fourth night, Laverna succeeds in knocking Frank Zhang, Yazan and Deion out, but using the Coco Puffs to see through Laverna's tricks, Nico di Angelo, Will Solace and Hazel confront Laverna. Laverna tells the demigods that she is taking out the trash and the mythics are criminals who have been charged, sentenced and punished. Breaking free of Hazel's grip, Laverna attacks, shrugging off Will's flashbang and sending Orcus, Johan and Will flying back into a wall. Laverna demands that Hazel get into the sack willingly, threatening to kill Hazel's friends otherwise. Nico is able to cut through Laverna's staff with his sword, but the goddess simply detaches her head and runs in circles as the horrified demigods and mythics watch.
Before Laverna can do anything else, Terminus teleports in between Hazel and the goddess, giving the group the chance to recover. Terminus identifies Laverna, telling the group that the goddess is so unimportant that they'd have to dive deep into Roman history to find her. Reattaching her head, Laverna tells the mythics that they are all monsters, and they need to act like it and they will all face the judgment of the court. Laverna warns Nico that if he thinks her to be terrifying, Laverna's masters, the judges, are worse.
Fed up and furious, Will's whole body becomes wreathed in light, glowing like the Sun Chariot and radiating enough heat to make steam curl off of Nico's jacket. Will advances on Laverna with the Coco Puff Grief at his heels, causing Laverna to back away. Will demands answers, threatening to burn the goddess otherwise, but Laverna tells him that it doesn't matter as there are a hundred others to take her place and they are putting the world to rights. After the heat coming from Will raises blisters on her face, Laverna makes a run for it. Laverna may have managed to get away into the stacks and the Mist, but Loneliness and Grief latched onto her. Unused to feeling Grief, Laverna shrieks and literally unravels into a pile of rotten ropes. Terminus guesses that Laverna has retreated into whatever dark sewer she calls home until the goddess can regain her strength. Before her disappearance, Loneliness steals Laverna's ID card for the California Superior Court, County of San Fransico, a clue to the court that she was talking about.
The next day, Deion and Yazan reveal to Nico, Will and Hazel that the entire Second Cohort spent the night building a shrine for Laverna on Temple Hill that they designed like a holding cell for the goddess. It's Laverna's first real shrine in millennia and the mystery means that she won't be sure if it's safe to take the offerings.
Laverna is later at Golden Gate Park where Hazel notices the goddess snort, covering mouth and trying very hard not to look at the two new gods who have been summoned. Pirithous has her identify Dolus and Apate after they show up instead of Hades. Laverna explains that the two look exactly like the gods of truth and honesty and the only way to tell the difference is that Dolus and Apate can't stand on their own two feet. The two gods turn Tantalus and Mary to dust and, when Laverna refuses to answer their questions, Dolus makes her explode into a cloud of lint. Apate clarifies that they didn't kill Laverna but just sent her to Mongolia or possibly Tanzania and the goddess will eventually find her way back.
Appearance[]
Laverna looks like a human woman in a multi-pocketed sackcloth dress, cinched at the waist with a length of rope. Laverna's feet are dirty and bare, her hair a wild mess of black. Laverna's features are like those of a feral cat -- bright angry eyes, dilated pupils, flared nostrils, and bared teeth that looked both too sharp and too numerous. When Laverna confronts the demigods and mythics at Camp Jupiter, she is holding a black iron staff in one hand and a burlap sack. Noting her resemblance to La Benfa, the Christmas witch, Nico di Angelo suspects that if Laverna's sack is full of presents, they were stolen from children after the goddess knocked them unconscious.
At Golden Gate Park, Laverna is leaning on a new iron staff with her sack over her shoulder. Hazel thinks that Laverna looks like Santa's evil sister after a hard night abducting naughty children.
Abilities[]
Laverna is a fairly minor goddess and not very powerful.
- Mist Control: Laverna is talented at using the Mist, covering her intrusions into Camp Jupiter so that Terminus doesn't detect her and putting Yazan and Hazel Levesque to sleep.
- Telekinesis: With a wave of her staff, Laverna is able to send Orcus, Johan and Will Solace flying backwards into a wall.
- Head Detachment: Laverna is capable of detaching her head from her body which Terminus says is a dead giveaway of her identity.
