As he and his friends are playing hurling one day, a boy comes out of the woods and asks to join them. He puts him on Lugaid's team and the boy, who introduced himself as Denme, breaks his leg and scores goals for the opposing team. As his team is about to beat “Denme”, the new comer goes back into the woods. “Denme” returns and his skills keep improving. Mahan eventually tells his father about the newcomer and is told to kill the boy on sight. The next time “Denme” arrives, he has him play against more and more his friends until he tells him his father said to kill him on sight and they go in for the kill. However “Denme” fights them off and goes into the woods. “Denme” returns in the summer and requests to swim, be rejects the request but “Denme” gets in anyway. Mahan orders his friend down the boy, who fights them off and possibly kills some of the boys. He says to tell the adults as “Denme” leaves.
