These two dears have been with me for a long time - sun dragons, you know, gifts from my grandfather Helios.

Medea, in The Lost Hero

The Sun Dragons, also known as Phil and Don, were two sun dragons that belong to the evil sorceress Medea. They were given to her by her grandfather, Helios, to pull her golden chariot.

History[]

After killing the children of her and Jason at Corinth due to him wanting to marry Princess Glauce instead of herself, Helios gave Medea the sun dragons that came with a chariot as a gift. She used them to flee to Athens where she married Aegeus, Theseus' father.

The Heroes of Olympus[]

The Lost Hero[]

After Medea came through the Doors of Death, she made an underground department store in Chicago, her sun dragons were kept in large sundial compartments. She released them on Jason Grace and Leo Valdez when they visit her with Piper McLean. The boys defeat them with the help of Leo's robotic dragon, Festus

The Trials of Apollo[]

The Burning Maze[]

Medea uses them to fight Apollo, Meg McCaffrey, and Piper McLean when the three go into the Labyrinth to explore the burning maze.

Appearance[]

Medea's sun dragons are described as being the size of a camper van, but not particularly large. They have golden scales that spew yellow fumes from their nostrils like sulfur-fueled locomotives. Their fangs are described as like porcelain in a fiery kilns in their mouths. They have glowing orange eyes that can paralyze anyone who looks into them.

Trivia[]

  • Similar to how gods suddenly appear, Medea being given the chariot is an example of deus ex machina. That term refers to when something in a story comes out of nowhere to help resolve it.
