The Minotaur is a bull-human hybrid monster. He debuts in the first episode of the Percy Jackson TV show.
History[]
The Minotaur was born of a cursed union between Queen Pasiphaë of Crete and a sacred bull. Ashamed of his monstrous stepson, King Minos ordered the inventor Daedalus to build a Labyrinth to imprison the beast. The king kept the monster fed by ordering the people of Athens to send a group of young people as tributes to Crete, where they would be locked in the labyrinth and eaten by the Minotaur. Eventually, the Athenian Theseus, a demigod son of Poseidon, killed the Minotaur and ended the reign of terror.
Millennia later, the Minotaur regenerated and returned to the living world.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (TV series)[]
Season One[]
“I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher”[]
The Minotaur catches the scent of a powerful young demigod, Percy Jackson, in New York State. He chases the boy, his mother, and the satyr Grover Underwood nearly to the border of Camp Half-Blood. To ensure that Percy makes it to camp safely, Sally breaks off from the group to distract the monster. He grabs the human and begins to crush her to death, only for her to evaporate in his hand. Enraged by his mother's apparent death, Percy charges at the monster and eventually stabs the Minotaur through the head with his own horn.[1]
“I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom”[]
Percy's defeat of the Minotaur spreads through the camp gossip chain. Some demigods are impressed, while others, like Clarisse La Rue, are dubious and suspect Percy made up the story for the sake of glory. [2]
Personality[]
The Minotaur is a brutal, relentless hunter with a taste for human flesh. He has fully accepted his animalistic, monstrous nature, but the fact that he wears underpants suggests that he has just enough humanity to be ashamed by his nakedness.
Abilities[]
- Super Strength: The Minotaur is strong enough to lift a car overhead and throw it some distance away.
- Super Speed: The Minotaur moves much faster than one would expect for his size. He can move just as quickly on two legs as he can on four legs.
- Immortality: Like all monsters, the Minotaur has no soul. When killed, his body turns to ash and travels to Tartarus. Over time, his body will regenerate and he will return to the living world.
Trivia[]
- The Minotaur is modeled on a Brahman bull, and has the animal's signature downward-facing ears. The creature design team wanted the creature to be intimidating, but also silly. In an interview with Den of Geek, visual effect supervisor Erik Henry stated, "There has to be a little teddy bear in it. If it’s just this snarling, menacing beast, that would scare kids into turning it off. If you make it too doe-eyed, the adults watching it with their kids tune out." [3]
- While most of the monster was created with CGI, visual effects supervisor Jeff White estimates that about one-third of the Minotaur was built practically. Costume designer Tish Monaghan made actual giant underwear for the Minotaur, and a stand-in performer walked on stilts and carried around a Minotaur head to help the actors maintain their lines of sight. For the scene where Percy climbs onto the monster, actor Walker Scobell climbed onto a "motion base" to create the illusion he was being jostled around by the creature.[3]
