“ | Which idiot god broke the Sacred Oath?! | ” |
–Nakon to the other gods in The Storm Runner. |
Nakon (pronounced "nah-CONE") is the Mayan god of war and a member of the council in the Old World.[1]
History[]
Nakon was honored at the Pax (Planting Time/May), where the war-chief, named after him, was escorted to a temple. Feasts were had and people performed the Holkan-Okot, "Dance of the Warriors." The war god was often depicted with a black line on his face representing war-paint or his gaping wounds and presiding over the body of a sacrificed victim.[2][3]
Nakon is often associated with Ah-Puch. But they eventually fought each when the latter declared war.[4]
Storm Runner Trilogy[]
The Storm Runner[]
According to Brooks, Nakon has been hungry for blood and he's been itching for a fight but never had a good excuse until now. After Ah-Puch was released on the solar eclipse, he and the other gods really want another war, Jazz said they have been in an era of peace for too long. Of course, if there was a war, everybody would die.
Nakon, along with Hurakan, K'ukumatz, Alom and Ixkawkaw arrive in the Old World to kill Ah-Puch. When Zane Obispo is revealed to be the one of the prophecy and Hurakan's son, he and the others sentence the storm god to death and allow Zane to fight the former ruler of Xib'alb'a. After the fight, Nakon and the other gods were led to believe that Zane died in battle, not knowing that he was rescued by Ixtab. So he rounded up the Yant'o Triad and the rest of Ah-Puch's pawns, the potential war was averted. He and the council also agreed to just lock Hurakan up in a small prison as they might need his powers someday.
The Fire Keeper[]
Nakon was one of the gods present for the execution of Hurakan, Bird and Jordan manipulated them into changing their minds so they can raise Tlaltecuhtli. After the twins escape and they catch Zane and Brooks, he and the other gods are shocked to see Ah-Puch and the godborns. In Xib'alb'a, Zane explains everything to the gods and they pardon K'ukumatz, Pacific, and any god who broke the oath and their children. They reopen the Shaman Institute of Higher-Order Magic to train the godborns and claim them. He reveals that Marco is his son and they decide to officially claim their children in June so that they can find more godborns and keep them out of the twin's hands.
The Shadow Crosser[]
He is present at the claiming ceremony to officially claim Marco as his son. Soon after Akan, the wine god, is killed and he and the other gods congregate to discuss matters. However it is a trap set up by Ixkik' and he and the other gods are imprisoned in Tlaltecuhtli, the Mexica goddess of the Earth, and sent back to 1985. He and the others are brought back to the present by a handful of godborns and freed, albeit as teenagers.
Shadow Bruja Duology[]
Lords of Night[]
After losing a wrestling match against his son, Nakon goes with Marco to Lake Zirahuén in Southern Mexico, the father and son join his son's friends at the Cinco's hideout. The war god scans the area and says there are demons on the property along with bees, enemy godborns, and the Lords. Marco agrees to take out the demons as Ren creates shadow butterflies to handle the bees.
Appearance[]
Nakon was a burly man with a long beard and black circles inked around his eyes. He wore a leather jacket, tattered jeans, and motorcycle boots.
Personality[]
Nakon is very quick to anger, he face may even turn red. He loves a good fight, especially when it's against Ah-Puch. Nakon also becomes excited in The Fire Keeper, because the coming war means that he can begin working on battle strategy. But he's not the smartest, so he'll fall for fake blood. Like the other Mayan gods, he loves sacrifices, mostly blood.[5]
Abilities[]
- Battle Prowess: As the God of War, he is probably a fierce warrior.
- Odikinesis: As the God of War, he has control over feelings and emotions of war (such as hate and rage
- Telumkinesis: As the God of War, he can likely control weapons.
- Shapeshifting: He has the ability to take on any form. His son, Marco, was given this ability as well.
