Plot[]

Percy and Annabeth go undercover on an island to rescue their friends.

Summary[]

After the destruction of Clarisse's ironclad, Tyson begins to sink to the ocean floor. When he reaches the bottom, he realizes he can breathe underwater. After looking around, a bracelet floats towards him. Tyson grabs it and turns around to find a presence.

Elsewhere, Percy dreams he is in a room filled with dead demigods. The doors fling open to reveal a cloaked figure who fires lightning at him, and he wakes up. Annabeth wakes up as well, and the son of Poseidon insists they act now, while the daughter of Athena insists they wait until morning to better enact their existing plan. After pressing him about his dream, Percy reveals he saw Thalia Grace. They talk about the meaning of the dream before going back to sleep.

In Polyphemus' Cave, Polyphemus talks about his isolation and how he is comfortable with it and untrusting of outsiders to Clarisse La Rue and Grover Underwood. The daughter of Ares tells him to be quiet as Polyphemus states he has found companionship in his victims, as well as knowledge of the outside world, which he gained from them. Grover asks how he knew to use the Golden Fleece to lure in satyrs, and the cyclops reveals that Pan left it on his island. Clarisse calls his cowardice, while Polyphemus does not correct him. He states he is concerned about the demigods coming to rescue the captives, but will use the two as bait to trap their saviors.

As Percy and Annabeth sneak onto the island, they make their way to the sheep pen. Annabeth grabs some pelts as Percy watches for Polyphemus. As Annabeth reaches the pen, she gets an Iris Message from Luke Castellan. The son of Hermes realizes where she is and warns her about the danger she is in. Annabeth calls him out for simply checking to see if they found the fleece yet. She also agrees that Thalia hated her father, but would disagree with his desire to start a war. Percy arrives, inadvertently ending the call, to tell her Polyphemus is leaving. He tells her not to listen to Luke as they get ready.

On the Princess Andromeda, Alison Simms asks Luke why he is still talking to the daughter of Athena, as Luke gets equipment and states it was simply reconnaissance.

Back on the island, Percy and Annabeth don pelts and pretend to be sheep as Polyphemus releases the flock. As the cyclops leads the flock to graze, the demigods sneak off and hide until the cyclops leaves. Percy goes to the tree where the fleece is hanging and looks down to find Grover and Clarisse bound and gagged. They try to warn him that it is a trap, but he does not hear them as he reports his findings to Annabeth. Clarisse tries to free them both and breaks a mirror. Grabbing a broken shard, she cuts them free.

Percy and Annabeth question how they will save both of them before tying a rope around a tree to get inside. Percy climbs down as Annabeth keeps watch. As Percy climbs down, Annabeth notices a gold liquid dropping from the branches and realizes the fleece in front of them is fake. Polyphemus arrives, and Annabeth uses her hat to hide. After cutting themselves free, Grover and Clarisse tell Percy to climb up, but Polyphemus cuts the rope, and Percy falls. However, the daughter of Ares catches him, and Polyphemus taunts them. Wearing her hat, Annabeth baits Polyphemus away from the cave by taunting him, mentioning his past encounter with Odysseus.

Elsewhere, Luke arrives on the island and, seeing Polyphemus occupied, goes to the cave, finding the fake fleece. In the cave, the captives discuss their next move as Grover sniffs out the real fleece. Polyphemus senses this and runs to his cave. Annabeth removes her hat, and Luke sees her run after the cyclops.

Percy, Clarisse, and Grover try to open the cave when Polyphemus returns. Annabeth stabs the cyclops in the ankle, and he swats her away, deeply injuring her and knocking her unconscious. As the captives watch in horror, Tyson appears. Polyphemus chastises Tyson for siding with demigods as Tyson declares his loyalty to his friends, and the two cyclopes get into a fight, resulting in Tyson tackling Polyphemus off a cliff. Luke soon arrives and, as Percy tells him to stay away from Annabeth, Luke examines the daughter of Athena and declares her to be dying. Percy suggests using the fleece to help her, but Clarisse refuses to hand it over. Percy asks Luke to open a portal, but Luke insists he is unable to and requests the fleece. Clarisse refuses to hand over the fleece, and as Grover tries to mediate, Percy, succumbing to his fatal flaw, grabs it and hands it over to Luke. The son of Hermes drapes the Golden Fleece over the daughter of Athena and takes her with him.

Clarisse chastises Percy for his actions as the son of Poseidon reflects on his choice. Not long after, Tyson frees the three and declares Polyphemus to no longer be a threat. Tyson apologizes for failing to save Annabeth as Percy hugs his brother. Tyson takes them to where he last saw Luke, as Percy finds Annabeth's hat. As Clarisse demands that Percy tell her their next move, Tyson summons his Hippocampus friend, Rainbow, and three other Hippocampi to help them go after the son of Hermes and save their friend.

  • In the books, Annabeth pretends to be Nobody, while here Annabeth claims that Nobody sent her to help draw Polyphemus away from his cave.
