Nope is a hellhound puppy and a minor character in Wrath of the Triple Goddess. His name comes from the sound of his barks.

After Grover Underwood accidentally releases Hecate's pets Hecuba and Gale, Percy Jackson summons his pet hellhound Mrs. O'Leary to search for Hecuba. Instead, they find an injured, dirty hellhound puppy lost in an alley between a tattoo parlor and a Trader Joe's. Feeling sympathetic to the puppy's plight, Percy quickly adopts him, names him Nope, and takes him to Hecate's house at Gramercy Park for Grover to clean up and heal.

While visiting Alternative High School to gain research on Hecuba, Percy runs into Chiron, who advises him Nope could be useful because female hellhounds have a motherly instinct. That night, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover bring Nope with them to Astoria and come across a park with various Greek statues and find the essence of Shadow Travel. They are unsure if it is the result of coming or going until they hear screaming coming from a nearby restaurant, Sal's Souvlaki, and run over to find diners running from what they believe is rats. The three see Hecuba sitting on the roof of the building as undead Trojan warriors. The three fight the zombies as two ambush Percy and he sees a memory from Hecuba. After screaming and snapping out of it, he sees his friends and Nope in shock at his reaction and tells them what he saw, Percy says he saw one of the Queen's dead children, Troy in ruins, and the survivors becoming slaves. They deduce that Hecuba wants the Greeks to feel her suffering. As they plan their next move, they hear nearby screaming and go to investigate. They find more Trojans terrorizing a Greek bakery, Papou's Pastries, as the owner begs them to take care of the "rat problem". The three do so and, following a hunch Annabeth has, they go to the roof to find Hecuba. The daughter of Athena takes Nope and tries to use Hecuba's motherly instincts to calm her down. It works and, handing Nope to Percy, the son of Poseidon leashes Hecuba. Unfortunately, she bolts and takes Percy and Nope through a shadow portal with her. Percy holds onto him as Hecuba tries to shake them. Eventually they end up in Turkey, by the ruins of Troy. He explores as Percy continues Hecuba to come back.

The two hellhounds start to bond as Hecuba agrees to go back. The following day, he and Hecuba rest at the manse. When Percy, Annabeth, and Grover return with Gale, he greets them. On Halloween, he and Hecuba agree to help control ghosts as they make their way back to the manse. They reach St. Mark's Church and get to work. After the ghosts have been summoned and convinced to help, they move out. He and Hecuba help coral the ghosts as they head back to the manse. Once repairs are completed, Percy drops a torch out of exhaustion and Annabeth picks it up, keeping the ghosts at bay. He and Hecuba help the daughter of Athena to minimal success. After some of the ghosts possess mortals, Nope and the others pets help Grover keep them at bay as Percy takes care of the ghosts not possessing people. Once the ghosts are defeated, everyone enjoys the party. He happily greets the guests.

In the morning, Hecate returns and Nope is introduced to the Goddess. At first he is uncertain but quickly warms up to the goddess.

Appearance

Nope is a hellhound puppy with black fur. When Percy and Mrs. O'Leary first find him, his fur is matted with gunk with the hair around his eyes eaten by mites, and he is covered with fleas and ticks with flies around his fur and a large cut across his back, which Percy suspects must have been from another monster's claws, all of which are cleaned up and healed by Grover.

Personality

Nope is friendly and energetic, however, he is shy around new people. Because he is a puppy, he does not bark in complete sentences and refers to his friends with nicknames, such as "Mom" for Annabeth, "Chew Toy" for Grover, "Alley Boy" for Percy, and "Third Mom" for Hecate.
