Wrongly chosen, wrongly slain

A hero Valhalla cannot contain Nine days hence the sun must go east

Ere Sword of Summer unbinds the beast

–The Norns reciting a prophecy to Magnus Chase in The Sword of Summer.

The Norns are female beings in Norse mythology, who utter prophecies of upcoming future events and control the destiny of both gods and mortals.

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard

The Sword of Summer

The Norns appear after Magnus's death is shown. They reveal that he is a demigod son of Frey and recite a prophecy.

Appearance

The Norns are described in The Sword of Summer as three 9-feet-tall women shrouded in white. Under their hoods, their faces are beautiful, but unnerving – blank white, even their eyes, with their skin being like sculpted snow. Trailing behind them is a sheet of fog like a bridal train.

When they speak, it comes as a soft disembodied voice which resonates, seeping into Magnus' head, "turning [his] skull into an icebox."

Abilities

  • Control over Fate: They all have power to control the fates of the Norse Gods, giants, and other Norse Mythological beings.
  • Prophecy: They are able to speak and iterate prophecies, as shown in The Sword of Summer.

Trivia

  • Their Greco-Roman counterparts are the Moirai/Fates.
  • In mythology, the three main Norns are named Urd ("fate"), Verdandi ("present"), and Skuld ("future").
  • The Norns originate from Jotunheim, and are classified as giants.
  • The Viking death metal band Amon Amarth has an album titled Fate of Norns. The band itself has many songs involving Norse mythology.
