Nyame is the god of the sky of the Aken people in present day Ghana.

History[]

Nyame humored Anansi when the spider god asked for his stories and asked for a leopard, a python and a fairy in return. However, Anansi got all three and the sky god gave him stories.

In Series[]

When the Golden Crescent was ravaged by iron monsters, he was restrained and paralyzed by Fetterlings and Brand Flies. He watched helplessly as his people were taken away and blamed Tristan Strong for the catastrophe.

Tristan Strong Trilogy[]

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky[]

Tristan Strong, Gum Baby, Chestnutt, and Ayanna go to his palace to take his Story Box. However they find him restrained by iron monsters. He accuses Tristan as the cause of his people's abduction. After he is freed from the iron monsters he berates them as they plead for the Story Box. When Tristan reveals his people are alive, he agrees but reveals they are not the first to ask for the Story Box and he does not have it. He and Tristan talk in private about the division between the people of MidPass and Alke and points him to Anansi's Palace. He gives Tristan an adinkra charm to help him focus on the rhythm. At that Tristan snaps at him for never get a clear answer and that he is not a hero, much of Nyame's confusion.

A day or two later Tristan returns with the damaged story box and he fixes it after a brief argument with High John. As Tristan is filling it with stories, a massive ship with hundreds of iron monsters onboard emerges in the marina that Tristan identifies as the Maafa. He blames Tristan for giving him false hope that his people are alive and goes to find the iron monsters along with High John and Thandiwe. As he does, he is joined by the African American Gods but they are eventually overpowered. When Tristan tells him his plan to use the story box to defeat the Maafa, he calls the boy insane. When Tristan stops the attack he gives the boy an approving look and yells when he is told Anansi is impersonating Brer Rabbit. He takes Anansi back to his palace and orders him to stop and hand over his on story boxes and to fix the hole in the sky, he also places Anansi in Tristan's custody and to help the boy with his story project over the next twenty days.

Tristan Strong Destroys the World[]

Months after the Maafa of defeated, he and the other gods are overwhelmed on rebuilding. He is heard calling Sarah and Rose over for something.

The following day as a storm destroys Alke, he saved various infants and live stock and makes his way to the beach. As they get on the keelboat, he is shocked by Tristan's plan to take the Alkeans to his work, but supports it and helps imbue the stories of Alke into a quilt in the hopes of rebuilding in the future. They make it to Tristan's world, but some of the Alkeans are seperated. He takes refuge in the keelboat along with John Henry, Keelboat Annie, Lady Night, Mami Wata, Brer Bear, and Brer Rabbit. Two day later, they discover that Uncle Cotton is still around and has freed more haints. As they relay this information to Tristan, he tells them that the SBP can locate the missing Alkeans and shows them pictures of Ayanna, Junior, and Gum Baby.

Tristan Strong Keeps Punching[]

After Tristan escapes from a trap, he, Tristan's grandparents, John Henry, and Mami Wata listen as Tristan tells them King Cotton is back and they have to act immediately, they reveal to Tristan that they will handle it and he is being sent home to Chicago with Gum Baby. Tristan tries to protest, but they say his anger demonstrates during the previous night makes him to much of a liability and take the SBP from him. They say their goodbyes and leave.

He and the other gods search for Cotton to no success. After Tristan, Ayanna, and Thandiwe return from a failed rescue mission with a limp Gum Baby, the gods examin Gum Baby and discover the doll was drained of magic. He, Mami Wata, and Mami Wata call Tristan in and they scald Tristan for leaving and confine him to his quarters until they reach Chicago. Tristan says he had to stop Cotton, but the gods say they have been searching for the haint with no success. As they consul Tristan over High John, the boy says that gods cannot die as long as their stories are told and vows, as an anansesem, to tell them. Keelboat Annie hugs him and saying something about him being an anansesem, but the River Queen comes to an abrupt holt near St. Louis as Ayanna tells them to come outside. They head to the bow to see half a dozen ships occupied by redliners, who demand they handover Tristan quickly as they need to move. The gods stand in front of the boy as he sneaks away.

After Tristan goes missing and manages to contact them, he rejoices as he finds Junior and panics when learning Cotton has Tristan's bracelet. Later he and the other gods join John Henry on the shore of Lake Michigan as Cotton almost overpowers the steel driving man and box Cotton in, however Tristan realizes it is a trap, but warns the gods to late as Patty Roller leads hundreds of breakers into battle against the gods. He and the other gods put up a good fight but soon grow tired.

However, Tristan takes out the living plantation giving King Cotton his power, as well as the haint himself. After the battle, he and the others congratulate Tristan as he exits the ruble that was Old Angola. A few days later, he gives Tristan the SBP back, but without Anansi, who has gone missing. The sky god decides to take the other gods on a tour of the United States to search for more Alkeans, buying a gold tour bus to do so.

Nyame has graying hair, dark skin, and brown eyes.

Nyame cares greatly for the well-being of his people.

Abilities[]

  • Atmokinesis: As the god of the sky, Nyame can control the sky.
  • Photokinesis: Nyame can turn into light.
  • Creation: Nyame can create enchanted objects from light.
  • Magical Repairs: Nyame can fix magical objects.

Trivia[]

  • In some versions of Anansi's stories, mostly Caribbean folklore, Nyame is replaced by a tiger, even though tigers don't live in Africa or the Caribbean.
  • His Greek/Roman Counterparts are Ouranos/Caelus and Zeus/Jupiter.
  • His Egyptian counterpart is Nut.
  • His Mayan counterpart is Alom.
