Not part of Riordanverse
The following article/section is from the Paola Santiago continuity under Rick Riordan Presents and not the Riordanverse canon. |
“ | I'm 'not' one of them. As for the other thing... well, it shouldn't come as a huge shock to you that it was 'me' I really was trying to help-but don't worry, it won't be bad for you. | ” |
–Ondina to Pao after betraying her in Paola Santiago and the River of Tears. |
Ondina is the daughter of La Llorona.
History[]
Ondina was born to a woman (later known as La Llorona) and her lover. When she was a preteen/early teen, her mother went crazy and drowned Ondina and her two brothers, Beto and Luis, after her father left, doing so to supposedly spare them the shame of living with an unwed mother.
After that, La Llorona tried to revive her lost children to give them an opportunity to live again. Her younger brother Luis was lost during the ritual and her older brother Beto walked out on their mother for even trying to resurrect them. She would abduct subjects for her mother’s attempts at returning her to life, one of which being Emma Lockwood, who she met at the former’s county club.
Paola Santiago series[]
Paola Santiago and the River of Tears[]
Ondina appears to Paola Santiago in a dream, where Pao sees a hand with a ruby ring. When Pao tries to reassure herself that ghosts don't exist, Ondina (though unnamed and unseen) sarcastically finishes her sentence. Pao seems to think that Ondina was a figment of her subconscious, to which Ondina thinks is a joke as "You think you have the imagination to create me?" She then (snarkily) introduces herself after Pao continues to think that she is her imagination. Pao is trying to understand what is going on, when the hand grabs her and Ondina indifferently refuses to help.
Ondina is later seen fighting with Marisa Martínez in a cactus field. As she struggles she mentions something about the moon in three days. The former got distracted when Pao arrived at the field, allowing Marisa to pin her and put a blade to her throat. As Pao defends her against Marisa, Ondina tries to tell Pao something, with Marisa telling Pao not to listen to her and calling her an ahogada. Ondina then dissolves and leaves the scene.
Later she appears before Pao to tell her not to trust the Niños de la Luz as they are thieves and murderers. Before Pao can ask her anything else she vanishes.
After a hoard of ahgadas attack the camp, she comes to Pao's dream and mocks her for losing her friends. Pay demands to know where her friends are and who she is working for. Ondina falls silent as she starts to fade and she reveals she is also known as "La Hija de Lágrimas".
In the Rift, she appears to Pao, Dante Mata, and Bruto on the back of a large chupacabra. She sends a group of children through a portal and orders Pao and Dante to mount the older chupacabras. They enter the palace and she has them dismount and go up a set of stairs. A little after they are placed in cells, she goes to Pao and orders her to get up. She doesn’t and Ondina is forced to drag her out. However Pao overpowers her and pushes her into the cell and runs. Ondina escapes and, fuming, catches up with her. Pao uses her to free Bruto and unleash the Lechuza who swarm her as the girl and dog escape. She catches up with them just as her superior scolds her into submission. As she whimpers, Pao demands she get them out, but she reveals she can only do so with her superior’s permission. She blames the tongue thrashing from earlier on Pao and attacks her. As they fight she reveals she and the general made promises to eat other and that she is the general's daughter. Pao realizes that her mother, and killer, is La Llorana. She reveals that her mother has been stealing children to try and resurrect her own, and that Pao's soul was the perfect match for her. Pao uses the similarities to get her to think for herself and convinces her to open a portal to her mother, however she and Bruto stay behind.
When Pao is about to be sacrificed to resurrect her, she appears before her mother and orders her to stop. Her mother says it is to late as she tries to stop it herself. She reaches the orb just before her mother and takes the energy into her body. When she does so the orb loses it’s power and the sacrifices are freed. When Pao smashes the orb everyone gathers around her as the cave starts to collapse, but it can not vanish completely until La Llorona abandons her goals. Ondina convinces her mother to do so as they finally pass on.
Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares[]
Pao thinks of Ondina when she is out with her mother and Aaron.
Paola Santiago and the Sanctuary of Shadows[]
Emma mentions meeting Ondina when revealing to Pao that she thinks their meeting started Pao's paranormal adventures.
Appearance[]
Ondina appears as a pale girl around Pao's age with nearly waist-length curly black hair, and long limbs and fingers. She has a heart-shaped face, a pouty mouth, thick eyebrows, and too-large, glowing-green eyes with long lashes. She wears a black, old-fashioned dress with a high collar and lace around the sleeves and hem, and dainty ankle boots with heels.
Her skin feels shockingly chilly, and she smells like the river- fishy, metallic and cold. When Ondina appears in the cactus field, during her fight with Marisa, she wears her hair in a ponytail.
Personality[]
Ondina is a sarcastic, dry girl who was blindly loyal to her mother for a long time before she realized that she had no excuse for hurting other people. Despite her being upset and angry at her mother, she still loves her, and, in the end, forgives her, which allows them to finally move on.
Abilities[]
- Marrionetakinesis (limited): Ondina can control the movement of anyone in The Rift as long as she has her mother's permission.
Eythmology[]
- Ondina is a feminine given name of Latin origin meaning "little wave".
