“ | Behold, the mighty Roman Navy. | ” |
–Frank, sarcastically talking about the Pax, in The Son of Neptune. |
The Pax was a small row boat owned by Camp Jupiter and was also the only working ship in their Navy, as the Romans feared the sea. It fell apart and sank half way through the Quest for Thanatos. Due to its state, it was controlled and kept together only by the powers of Percy Jackson as the son of the sea god Poseidon which allows him to control watercraft.
The Heroes of Olympus[]
The Son of Neptune[]
Before Frank Zhang, Hazel Levesque, and Percy Jackson go on their quest to free the god Thanatos, Percy argues with Octavian about how much supplies they will need and get. While Octavian wants to give them none, Reyna Ramírez-Arellano agrees to allow them to use the full force of the Roman Navy as traveling over land is dangerous. When the three reach the docks, they come upon an old tarp with SPQR labeled on it. When they remove the tarp, they find a single row boat (without the oars) with the name Pax scrawled on the side and a set of painted sad eyes. Frank thinks that it is a joke. Percy uses his power over the sea to clean the boat and propel it forward toward Alaska. Eventually he asks for the help of a killer whale using macrobiotic beef jerky -"Promise not to feed me this, and I will take you north"- to pull them to Portland. The whale agrees and pulls them while Percy sleeps, but eventually passes the boat off to a school of sturgeons.
However, upon arriving at Seattle, the Pax gets several leaks and Percy claims that he is mostly holding it together with his willpower and by the time they reach the city, it falls apart and sinks. They are forced to use alternate transportation throughout the rest of the quest, such as Arion.
The Mark of Athena[]
When the Argo II is ready to sail with the combined forces of the seven of the prophecy, Ella becomes scared and says that she will not go on a boat previously mentioning several boats that ended in tragedy, including the Titanic, the Lusitania, and the Pax.
The Blood of Olympus[]
When Kymopoleia complains that the Romans never worshipped her, Percy comments that their navy had consisted of only one rowboat that he'd sank.
The Trials of Apollo[]
The Tyrant's Tomb[]
Apollo remembers that the Roman "navy" consists of some old triremes they only use for mock battles in the Colosseum and one rowboat they kept docked in Alameda.
