Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

When at the Yancy Academy pool, Percy manages to hold his breath for seven minutes, impressing his friend Grover Underwood. In English class the substitute, Mrs. Dodds, calls on Percy to read a line from Othello she wrote on the chalkboard, but because of his dyslexia he is unable to do so.

At home, Percy greets his mother and tells her school is not going well. Just as she says it will get better, Gabe walks in and demands a beer. Sally gets him one and Percy criticizes Gabe for his laziness and foul treatment of him and his mother. Gabe grabs Percy by the hair and reiterates his power over the teenager before leaving. Percy asks why his mother why she married him and states that Gabe has been good to them.

The following day, Percy goes on a class trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and he hears a voice warn him that everything is about to change. In the museum, Mrs. Dodds and Mr. Brunner, the chaperones, supervise the students. Mr. Brunner tells the class about the myth of how the gods came to power and brings up demigods. He calls on Percy to name one and, after understanding Ancient Greek writing, names Perseus. Mrs. Dodds calls Percy to talk and leads him into an empty room. Soon, she transforms into a winged creature and demands Percy give her the Master Bolt. Soon Grover and Mr. Brunner barge in and threaten to destroy Mrs. Dodds if she does not release Percy. She does so and flies out a window. As Percy panics, Grover and Mr. Brunner try to calm him down and he tells them Mrs. Dodds demanded he give her a lightning bolt, startling the other two. Grover and Mr. Brunner discuss what to do next as Percy tries to get an explanation out of them. Mr. Brunner tasks Grover to escort Percy to camp and take him directly to his mother. Before leaving, Percy’s teacher gives him a pen. Grover does so and, upon arriving, tells Sally they need to go. Gabe intervenes as he is hosting a poker game and needs her to serve refreshments. Grover knocks Gabe unconscious and they leave the city.

As they drive, Sally and Grover give Percy a brief explanation on what he is. When they reach a stretch of farmland, a cow is thrown at their car. Sally swerves to avoid to and they are thrown off the road. The car lands upside down and Grover shatters the back window to get them out. The realize they are being chased by the Minotaur and run. They reach Camp Half-Blood and, while he and Grover can enter, his mother cannot. She orders Percy to leave her as the Minotaur kills her. Grover tells Percy to click the pen and Mr. Brunner gave him and it turns a sword. After a brief fight, Percy slays the Minotaur and passes out.

Three days later, Percy wakes up in the infirmary thinking it was all a dream until Grover informs him it was not. Percy becomes overwhelmed with the knowledge that his only family is dead and Grover takes him on a tour of camp. As they walk, Grover explains that Percy’s learning disabilities are actually his strengths as a demigod. When they arrive at the beach, they see a heard of centaurs and Percy recognizes one as Mr. Brunner. The two meet up with their teacher, who intrudes himself as Chiron. They walk to the beach and, after Grover goes off to speak with daughters of Aphrodite, Chiron shows Percy his cabin. After looking around, Percy realizes his father is Poseidon and Chiron reveals his mother married Gabe to hide Percy from mythological threats and that he plans to have Percy plead his innocence in stealing the bolt in front of the gods.

As the campers prepare for a game of Capture the Flag, Percy is offered a spot on the blue team by Luke Castellan. During the game, Luke watches out for Percy as they are attacked by sons of Ares. However the two are separated and Percy finds himself by a stream. He finds the red team’s flag, but is quickly ambushed by five members of the opposing team, including their captain Annabeth Chase. Percy is outnumbered and is about to give up, however he hears a voice telling him to go to the water and he is healed and given an energy boost. Percy easily takes out his adversaries and disarms Annabeth. Percy takes the flag and claims victory for the blue team. At a feast, campers congratulate Percy and Annabeth compliments him. However, Hades emerges from the fire and offers Percy his mother in exchange for a Master Bolt. Percy insists he must save his mother, but Chiron is reluctant and tells Percy to stick with their original plan.

That night, Percy attempts to sneak out, but Grover catches him and tries to stop him. When he fails to stop the son of Poseidon, he goes with him and the two are soon joined by Annabeth. The three go to Luke’s cabin for advice and the son of Hermes gives them a map leading them to pearls Persephone uses to sneak guests out of the Underworld. The first pearl is located in Aunty Em's Gnome Emporium in New Jersey and Luke gives them a pair of Winged Shoes and his shield.

When the three arrive, they fan out and search for the pearl. Not long after, Grover, realizing they are in Medusa's lair. The two search for Annabeth and, using Percy’s phone to look at Medusa's reflection, find the gorgon taunting Annabeth after petrifying a woman gripping the daughter of Athena’s hand. They gain Medusa's attention and she goes after Percy as Grover frees Annabeth. Percy manages to evade Medusa before traps him under statues. He escapes but Medusa goes over to him and he closes his eyes. She attempts to manipulate Percy into opening his eyes, but Annabeth and Grover drive a pickup truck into the garden and distract Medusa. Percy uses the opportunity to decapitate Medusa. The three find the pearl on Medusa's bracelet and they take her head with them.

The three take the pickup truck and drive to the next pearl, a replica of the Athena Parthenos in Nashville, Tennessee. However, Grover gets tired as he drives and they stop at a motel. As Percy swims in the pool, Annabeth goes over the him and he heals her injured wrist. Annabeth mentions how their divine parents have been rivals for millennia and that Zeus decreed that the gods must not contact their demigod children. Soon Grover calls them back to the room and they watch an interview with Gabe painting Percy as a criminal. When Grover goes to the bathroom, he angrily picks up Medusa's head and tells the demigods not to put it in the bathroom sink. However, a maid walks by and screams upon seeing the head. The three then flee and make their way to Nashville.

When they reach Nashville, they scout out the park and find the pearl on the statues head. Grover suggests throwing his crutches to get it, but the demigods vote to wait until it closes to get the pearl. When the parthenos closes, they exit and bathroom to find five janitors. Annabeth takes them out and they call Luke to get advice on how to use the shoes. After telling Percy to get a running start, he takes off and struggles to get balanced. Eventually he gets the pearl and lands, but when he lands the janitors wake up and demand the bolt before turning into a hydra. Percy drops the pearl as he hides and tries to retrieve it. He cuts off the heads, but they grow back in twos. Grover uses the head to petrify to hydra and they get the pearl. After checking the map for the last pearl, they learn it is in the Lotus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

When they arrive at the casino, they are mesmerized by the activities, but try to remain focused on their goals. However, after eating some Lotus Flowers, they decide to have fun. Eventually, Percy is snapped out of it by his father and, after meeting a man from 1977, he seeks out his companions. After breaking Annabeth and Grover out of their trances, they fight the staff to get out and steal a car. After escaping, they realize they were in the lear of the lotus eaters and learn the Summer Solstice is a few hours away.

They reach Los Angeles in a few hours and, after finding Ancient Greek graffiti on the Hollywood sign, enter the Underground. They find Charon and, after giving him drachma, the ferryman takes them to Hades' Palace. Once they arrive, they are nearly eaten by Hellhounds until Persephone calls them off. She takes the three to Hades who demands the bolt. However, Percy reveals he does not have it but Hades insists he hand over the bolt and brings forth Sally. Percy throws the shield aside to hug his mother, revealing the bolt. They realize Luke was the true Lightning Thief and Hades nearly sends the four to Tartarus before Persephone takes the bolt and blasts Hades, erasing his memory. Persephone allows the four to leave but, with only three pearls, Grover volunteers to stay behind.

Percy, Annabeth, and Sally end up at the Observation Deck of the Empire State Building shortly before midnight and attempt to get to Olympus. However Luke arrives and reveals he stole the bolt to start a war so that the gods will destroy themselves. The son of Hermes snatches the bolt and a fight breaks out. While Luke has the upper hand, Percy defeats him when they end up on a building with multiple water tanks. Percy tosses Luke into a sea and takes the bolt back to Olympus with Annabeth, arriving one second after the deadline. He returns the bolt and tells the gods Luke is the real culprit and requests Zeus bring Grover back from the Underworld. Zeus agrees and dismisses the gods. As he leaves. Poseidon goes over the Percy and asks for his forgiveness. Poseidon reveals Zeus made the decree because his involvement in Percy’s life distracted him from his godly duties. Percy accepts his father’s apology and walks off.

At the entrance to Camp Half-Blood, Percy says goodbye to his mother, who promised to kick Gabe out, before going inside the grounds. Percy finds Grover and Chiron scolds the son of Poseidon for disobeying his orders and congratulates Percy for preventing war. He finds Annabeth and, as he goes to kiss her, she takes his sword and, after returning it, the two spare.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

When Percy is about to attempt the obstacle tower, he and Clarisse La Rue taunt one another before taking on the tower. As he is about to win, another camper gets his foot caught in a rope latter and the son of Poseidon reluctantly decides to help him. Percy frees the camper but is knocked out and the daughter of Ares wins. She mocks him as she camp celebrates her. Annabeth and Grover try to cheer Percy up by mentioning his achievements, but Grover unknowingly recites all of Clarisse's feats. Soon Dionysus tasks Percy with cleaning the arena. After Percy finishes, he goes to the water in an attempt to speak with Poseidon unsure if his father is listening. Soon Percy is called to the Big House by Chiron, who informs Percy a second child of Poseidon has been discovered, a cyclops named Tyson.

Upon learning of his brother, Percy thinks it is a cruel joke his father is performing on him. As Tyson talks about his life before coming to camp. Clarisse mocks Tyson for being a cyclops. Tyson puts on sunglasses to hide his eye in embarrassment and says he smells a bull. Just then the ground shakes and everyone runs to the barrier. They watch it ripple until a Colchis Bull comes charging through. They camper scramble and pickup any weapon they can to try and destroy the bull. After Percy fails to lasso the bull and is dragged to the Big House, Percy throws his sword into the bull’s mouth just as it is about to breathe fire. It jams some gears and it explodes. As Percy recovers from the shock, Luke walks over the the son of Poseidon and mocks him, saying Chiron is withholding truths from him and tells Percy about a prophecy before leaving. The campers gather around Thalia's Pine Tree and learn that Luke has poisoned it.

As Chiron is working on an antidote, Percy tells him that Luke mentioned a prophecy and Chiron sends him to meet with the Oracle of Delphi to learn more. She tells him he and Luke are destined to fight over the Golden Fleece and recites the Great Prophecy. The son of Poseidon reports this back to Chiron and expresses his concern that he will destroy Olympus. Chiron tries to comfort him, but to not avail. After Dionysus announces a quest to find the Golden Fleece in the Sea of Monsters, which he stole from Annabeth, the god tasks Clarisse with retrieving the fleece and has a satyr named Ichneutae accompany her. Percy tries to warn the daughter of Ares about Luke, but she ignores him.

Fearing Clarisse does not understand the true scope of danger, he recruits Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson to go with him to find the fleece. After calling the Gray Sisters' Taxi, they tell the three they want to go to Florida and they agree to take the four. After they mention the prophecy, Percy takes their eye and threatens to drop out the window if they do not tell him more. They tell Percy four numbers and demand their eye back, which he reluctantly agrees to. When Annabeth realizes, they are short on drachma, the Gray Sisters kick the four out in Washington, D.C. and they walk get coffee to plan their next move.

As they walk through D.C., he starts to bond with Tyson as Grover is abducted by agents of Luke. In a panic, the seek out Hermes. At first the god refuses to hear them out, but changes his mind upon hearing Luke’s name. Hermes takes the throne in back and gives them supplies- masking tape that causes whatever it outlines to disappear and a Thermos of Winds- before having George and Martha locate Luke. Once Luke is located off of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, the three set out. As they leave, Hermes tells Percy to apologize to Luke on his behalf.

When they reach the docks, they spot Luke’s yacht. After Tyson prays to Poseidon, a hippocampus appears and they ride it to the boat. They sneak on board but are soon caught and brought before Luke. The son of Hermes says he sent Grover ahead with some of his forces and shows them a Sarcophagus and reveals his plan to use the fleece to resurrect Kronos. Annabeth calls Luke a traitor to Thalia as he calls her a traitor for associating herself with a cyclops and has the three thrown into the brig. As they sit in cells, Annabeth expresses her belief that Tyson wanted them to be caught as Percy asks why she hates Tyson. When Annabeth refuses to answer, Percy tries to grab their supplies and uses the ocean to rock the boat. He succeeds and uses the tape gun to create a doorway. The three escape and commandeer a lifeboat , using the thermos as a makeshift engine after Tyson drops the original engine. As they steer, Annabeth tells Percy she hates cyclopses because a cyclops killed Thalia just as Tyson drops the thermos. Soon they realize they are in a Sea of Monsters and are soon found by Chrysaor. Percy tries to control the water, but cannot as they our outside Poseidon’s domain and are swallowed.

In the belly of the beast, they hear Clarisse and go over to her to find her commanding an iron clad staffed by undead Confederate soldiers. While the daughter of Ares is surprised by find them, the two groups agree to work together and succeed in escaping. Once they reach the water’s surface, the daughter of Ares tells her crew to go southwest, which Percy says will lead to West Palm Beach, Florida. After realizing he can instinctively navigate on the water, he realizes the numbers the Gray Sisters gave him earlier were coordinates and he points them northeast to Polyphemus' Island.

Once they arrive, the demigods and Tyson disembark and explore the theme park until they find a roller coaster they suspect leads to Polyphemus's cave. Once they hit a boulder, they get off the ride and find satyr skulls on sticks. They find Polyphemus yelling a Grover, who he thinks is a cyclops chambermaid, about food. Grover notices the four and reveals he has been trying to get the fleece for days. They come up with a plan to have Grover distract the cyclops and take the fleece. However Polyphemus smells them and attacks. After a brief skirmish, the five take the fleece from Polyphemus and trap him in a cave. Not long after Luke and his forces arrive and demand the fleece. Luke tries to shoot Percy, but Tyson takes the arrow for him and falls off a cliff into a river.

Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Clarisse are restrained as Luke places the fleece on the coffin and waits for Kronos to be revived. As Percy mourns Tyson, the others tell him they need to act and he frees them. Percy goes after Luke as the others take care of the son of Hermes forces. As the son of Poseidon and Luke have a tug of war over the fleece, Tyson- who reveals the water healed him- arrives and aids his brother. However Kronos is resurrected and consumes Grover, Luke, and Luke’s forces. Percy slashes at Kronos's ankles and his feet return to the coffin. Percy manages to disintegrate Kronos and take the fleece. However Annabeth is fatally wounded by the Manticore, who is promptly killed by Grover and Clarisse, They place the fleece on Annabeth and save her life before returning to camp.

Once they arrive at camp, Percy and the others watch as Clarisse drapes the fleece over the tree and the barrier is restored. Later, he speaks with Chiron about the possibility of the prophecy not referring to the events on the Sea of Monsters. Percy believes he can handle it and Chiron wishes him luck. He goes to the Dining Pavilion and tells Tyson he does not need to hide his eye. The following morning at breakfast, Percy gets word that something happened by the tree and goes to see what happened. They find a girl around his age who, much to his shock, introduces herself as Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus. Percy questions what this means for the prophecy.

Etymology

  • Perseus is a Greek name derived from the verb (perthein), meaning “to waste, ravage or destroy”. Thus, his name means “the destroyer”, possibly alluding to his father, Poseidon, who is known as the Earth-Shaker and often destroying places due his storms and earthquakes. His mother named Percy after the hero Perseus, as he was the only hero who had a happy ending in the Greek myths.
  • Jackson is a common name of English and Scottish origin meaning "Son of Jack”.

Trivia

  • His character's age has been increased from 12 to 16 to appeal to older viewers. Throughout the film series, Percy hasn't been shown to be able to remain dry underwater or anywhere else either. For this and other reasons, films were received badly by fans who thought it deviated too far off course from the books. Rick Riordan also revealed that he'd sent emails to Fox and Disney criticizing the script of the movie and explaining that parents would never show such content to their children and that disgusted fans would be flocking out of movie theatres in droves.[1]
