I will know what you fear most.

–Phobos, to Percy Jackson

Phobos (meaning "fear" in Greek) is the Greek god of personal fear, panic, and rout. His twin brother is Deimos. They are known for accompanying Ares into battle. His Roman counterpart is Timor.

History

Early life

Ares

Ares, his father

Phobos was born to Ares and Aphrodite

Along with his twin brother Deimos, Phobos would often accompanies Ares in battle.

Trojan War

During the fall of Troy, Phobos inflicted bloodshed and terror in the war with Phobos, his aunt Enyo, and ErisAchilles later depicted the aforementioned gods in his shield.

The Demigod Files

The Stolen Chariot

Angry that their sister Clarisse La Rue was allowed to ride in Ares' chariot because they usually use the chariot, Phobos and Deimos decide to steal it from her. They then hide it in the Staten Island Zoo, and use it as bait to catch their sister and Percy Jackson. Phobos fights Percy, but is defeated and disappears.

The Heroes of Olympus

The Blood of Olympus

Underground, when Piper McLean and Annabeth Chase are fighting Mimas, Piper sacrifices her cornucopia to her brothers, Phobos and Deimos. Deimos's face came off the wall and crashed onto Mimas, killing him, indicating that the god had caused this action to get rid of the giant. Then Piper thanked her brothers and asked for a way out. Phobos then opened up a hole in the wall for them to get out along his twin.

Personality

Percy admits that out of all of the gods and monsters that he disliked, Phobos "took the prize." He likes to taunt people and show them their fears.

Despite his behavior towards Clarisse, Phobos isn't all that bad. He accepted their other half-sister Piper's request for help.

Appearance

Phobos is described as a teenage boy with fiery eyes. He wears a black shirt, ratty jeans, a leather jacket, a bandana on his head. He has a knife tucked in his belt.

Abilities

Phobos presumably has standard powers of a god.

  • Odikinesis: As the god of personal fear, panic and rout, Phobos can control the feelings and emotions of war, such as fear, hate and rage.
    • Persona Worst Fear Generation: Phobos has the ability to make individuals see their worst fears  through eye contact. In The Demigod Files, Clarisse saw her father in a fury and Percy saw all his friends from Camp Half-Blood in flames. However, Phobos can only do this to one person at a time.
      • Fear Domination: Phobos is unable to be fought without gaining some sort of awareness, though only if his victims have enough will power to fight back. The fish in the aquarium woke Percy, who woke up Clarisse.
  • Teleportation: Phobos can vanish to other locations, leaving a curtain of yellow vapor behind.
  • Cult Juridistion: Phobos has control over objects which represents him. In The Blood of Olympus, he was able to bring a statue of himself down upon Mimas without being physically present.
  • Swordsmanship: Phobos is a sword fighter. Despite of being a son of a war god, he is a terrible physical combatant likely because he never had to rely on his skill and thus never trained.

Timor

Phobos may be able to change his appearance into his Roman form, Timor. As Timor he becomes more disciplined, warlike, and militaristic. It is unknown if he is known at Camp Jupiter, and it is unknown if he has any children, Phobos or Timor.

Etiomology

The word phobia derives from his name, which he really is proud of.

Trivia

  • When questioned about the difference between the two, it was stated Phobos typically acts on one person at a time and Deimos acts on a larger scale.
  • Phobos, the larger and closer of the two moons of Mars, is named after this deity.
