Ratatosk (often spelled Ratatoskr) is a gigantic monstrous squirrel who runs up and down the world tree Yggdrasil, attempting to bring it down. He spreads lies and gossip between the dragon, Nidhogg, at the roots of Yggdrasil and the anonymous eagle and Vedrfolnir at the top. Ratatosk casts insults that can fill one with despair when one hears them.

The Sword of Summer[]
Ratatosk made two brief appearances. He attacked Magnus, Blitzen, and Hearthstone in Hotel Valhalla when the latter duo climbed Yggdrasil to get to Valhalla. He was very strong. Yet, he was pushed back by the members of Floor Nineteen of Valhalla.
Ratatosk was then seen when Magnus, accompanied by Samirah al-Abbas, Blitzen, and Hearthstone had coaxed Yggdrasil's branches and entered it. Ratatosk was seen more vividly this time, and his claws "were scimitars." Samirah al-Abbas said about him, "His bark is literally worse than his bite." Since Hearthstone was stuck in sticky moss, Sam had to camouflage herself and Hearth with her hijab, while Magnus and Blitzen escaped to Folkvanger.
The Hammer of Thor[]
Ratatosk briefly appears with his mouth on the window of Helgi's office. Fortunately the window was sound-proofed and no one could hear his insults. Helgi then closed the shades on his window and continued to talk about Loki's escape.

Abilities[]
- Sharp Claws and Squirrel Fangs: Ratatosk's claws were described as scimitars and would likely have large fangs as well. These allow him to carry out strong physical attacks.
- Climbing: He can easily scale the World Tree, having been doing so for centuries.
- Audiokinesis (limited to insults): Ratatosk is known mostly for his ability to cripple and weaken opponents with taunts. His bark sends telepathic sound wave messages that have the power to depress an individual harshly, as he did to Magnus. These insults can range from very funny, like "Your dwarf's pith helmet is stupid" to Magnus Chase regarding Blitzen, to very hurtful, like "You couldn’t help her when you were alive" to T.J. regarding his mother. As in all forms of audiokinesis, it is easily evaded by the deaf. In fact, Hearthstone, who is deaf, is the only character seen so far to be unaffected by Ratatosk's insults.
