Samirah al-Abbas gives red gold to the frost giant Harald in order for her and Magnus Chase to use his boat to fish in Massachusetts Bay in order to attract the sea goddess, Ran, and says that she'll give him five more to return them to shore.
When Ran appears after Magnus catches Jormungand, Harald has Sam give the five red gold to Ran as an offering to the goddess. After retrieving Sumarbrander, Sam tells Harald that she will give him ten red gold to return her and Magnus to shore (to Midgard, not Jotunheim).
As described by Magnus, red gold has a gold surface which glows so warmly that it seems to be on fire.
- According to mythology, dwarf king Hreidmar had Loki cover the outside of his deceased son, Otr, with red gold.
- Red gold appears to be the Norse counterpart of golden drachmas and denarii.
