Shikhandi (SHEE-kahn-DEE) is one of the protagonists in Mahabharata.[1]
History[]
In Shikhandi's previous life, he was Princess Amba of Kashi and betrothed to Shalva, the son of a neighboring king. She thought was going to be happy, until Bhishma literally kidnapped her and her younger sisters, Ambika and Ambalika, into a golden chariot and off to his kingdom. While Amba's sisters accepted his hand in marriange, she did not due to her own betrothal. Except Shalva refused to marry her because she was in Bhishma's house, he wanted her to marry him. Alas, Bhishma made an oath to his father that he would never marry, now Amba was rejected by her father's kingdom, not even her sisters' husband will accept her. Because of Bhishma, she had nowhere to go, she swore revenge on him for ruining her life. Bhishma was invincible, so Amba performed lots of penance so she can kill him in her reincarnation of Shikhandi. During the Kurukshetra War, Bhishma refused to fight Shikhandi due to originally being a woman, but Shikhandi killed him with an arrow.[2]
