The Syamantaka Gem is a jewel from Hindu mythology. According to legend, any place who possessed this jewel would never be encountered by any disasters and always be filled with prosperity.
History[]
The Syamantaka originally belonged to Surya, he had a Yadava nobleman named Satyajit as one of his devotees. The god had once appeared to him, but he couldn't see him due to his appearance. When Satyajit politely requested him to appear in a form he could see him as, Surya decided to give him the Syamantaka and let him keep it due to his devotion.
With the jewel, everyone thought Satyajit was the sun god, even Krishna requested he'd give the jewel to King Ugrasena of Dwarka, but he refused out of greed and selfishness. He did, however, give it to his brother, Prasena, who wore it often like a simple ornament. However, one day while he was hunting, he was attacked and killed by a lion, who took the jewel. The lion in turn was killed by Jambavan. When Satyajit did not hear back from Prasena, he and others suspected Krishna as the thief of the Syamantaka due to wanting it so badly. He went off to prove his innocence and eventually found Jambavan's son playing with the gem. This resulted in a fight between Krishna and Jambavan for twenty-eight days, the latter got tired and realized that Krishna was the reincarnation of Rama. So not only did he return the gem, but he also offered his daughter, Jambavati, in marriage.
Meanwhile, Krishna's friends were getting worried that Krishna hadn't come back in a while, they worshiped Lakshmi to ensure his return. When he came back, he returned the Syamantaka to Satyajit, but feeling remorse for falsely accusing him, he gave it to Krishna and allowed him to marry his own daughter, Satyabhama, as an apology. Krishna accepted Satyabhama but insisted that Satyajit keep the jewel.
A few days later, Krishna left for Hastinapura after hearing that the Pandavas may have been killed in a fire. In his absence, some Yadava warriors named Kritavarma, Akrura, and Shatadhanva, upset that they couldn't marry Satyabhama, successfully conspired to assassinate Satyajit and steal the Syamantaka, they also really wanted that. When Satyabhama informed him of what happened, Krishna killed Shatadhanva, but he did not find the jewel on him. It was actually with Akrura, who admitted his guilt, so Krishna allowed him to keep it if he stayed in Dwarka.
