The Spirit Glass is a book by Roshani Chokshi under the Rick Riordan Presents imprint that will be focused upon the folklore and mythology of the Philippines.[1] It was released on September 5, 2023.
Synopsis[]
Corazon yearns to finally start training as a babaylan (a mystical healer and spirit guide) under her powerful guardian, Aunt Tina. As soon as her magic awakens, Corazon plans to bring her parents back from the dead and no longer have to rely on a soul key to allow visits with her their ghosts for a few hours every Saturday night.
But when a vengeful ghost steals Corazon’s precious key, the fragile balance between the human world and the spirit world is thrown out of whack. Aunt Tina reveals that if Corazon wants her magic to awaken, then she just lay the ghost to rest by fashioning a new soul key.
With her rather bloodthirsty gecko companion, Saso, Corazon embarks on a quest through the spirit realms. But they must move quickly, for if the ghost gets through the spirit glass, all hope will be lost.
Roshani Chokshi pays tribute to her Filipino heritage in this book that has all the magic, sparkle, and heart that made her Aru Shah series a fantasy classic.
Plot[]
Corazon Lopez had a special power, she can do almost anything with weather. However, this was a secret hidden from herself until just recently. This was due to her being a babaylan, a mortal who guards the boundaries between the mortal and spirit realms.
One Saturday evening, Corazon tried to use her powers to help with dinner. After a while, her anito companion, a talking lizard named Saso, said it was working. Unfortunately, it wasn't, they'll just have to be patient, just like always. It was two days before her twelfth birthday and the first day of her official training. Her Aunt Celestina, or Tina is coming over and she'll tell her a story that night. After thinking about her mother, Althea, Corazon began to feel self-conscious. The family had a special dress that each babaylan wore when performing magic.

Trivia[]
- The book was reported to have the initial title of The Spirit Mirror when it was first acquired by Rick Riordan Presents for publishing.[2]
- When first announcing the book, Rick Riordan pointed out that exploring Filipino mythology was one of the top requests for world mythologies that they had consistently been getting asked about.[1]
- Prior to the book's announcement, Chokshi's only work on Filipino mythology had been relegated to a few short stories. According to Chokshi, this was mainly because of Filipino mythology being passed down as an oral tradition that thus made it more complicated to record as opposed to Hindu mythology. Chokshi further differentiated the writing for Filipino mythology versus Filipino folklore (the latter of which was more known in texts), pointing out that a lot of conscientious research needed to be employed in the former in order to give it the respect it deserved. She also noted that she did enjoy the stories her mother had told her and would enjoy celebrating them one day with books of her own.[3]
