“ | Don't you think I know that, human? Loki is a trickster. It is his nature. But Thor is the one who killed by grandfather, my father, my mother, my entire family! [...] This marriage alliance is Loki's way of apologizing, don't you see? He regrets betraying my grandfather. We will combine our forces, take over Midgard, and then storm the city of the gods itself! | ” |
–Thrym, in the Hammer of Thor |
Thrym III is a Jotunn, the grandson of the original Thyrm who stole Mjolnir and the brother of the giantess Thrynga. He was ultimately killed by the god Thor.
History[]
When Thrym III was a child he was a guest at his grandfather's wedding to Freya. Rather than Freya however Thor was there instead, dressed as the bride. As soon as the ceremony took place the god stole back his hammer. He killed everyone except Thrym III and his sister Thrynga.
Personality[]
Thrym, like the rest of his kin, is power-hungry and eager to end the world of the mortals and gods. Despite that, the jotun is shown to be timid and rather dull, frequently commanded around by his much more fearsome sister who demands he take his kingship much more seriously. Thrym proves to be too trusting towards Loki. He lacked awareness of the trickster god's true danger and believed he was nowhere capable of freeing himself.
Appearance[]
Thrym uncannily resembled Norm from Cheers. His body was perfectly round, stuffed into black polyester pants and a red T-shirt with a wide black tie. His mouth was wet and pink. He had a moon face with fuzzy dark hair framing it, a nonexistent chin and no facial hair. He later puts on a black tux jacket with a pink carnation pinned to the lapel, which made him look "slightly more elegantly ugly."
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard[]
The Hammer of Thor[]
Loki talks him into marrying his daughter Samirah al-Abbas in exchange for the Skofnung Stone and sword. He is briefly shown in one of Magnus's dreams being scared by his sister, Thrynga.
Magnus and his friends first officially meet Thrym in the giant's underground diner. He expresses excitement at the arrival of his queen, but is yelled at by Thrynga to dress and clean himself properly. When the festivities begin Thrym laughs and shovels down nachoes with the rest of the giants, and finishes the second-course meal of cheeseburgers before it is time to head for Loki's cavern. When he cracks open the entrance his guests question whether Loki's plans would ruin the wedding. Thrym dismisses the thought and they made their way down to the locatioon.
During the ceremony Thrym drinks liquid from a jewel-encrusted goblet and makes a binding oath to marry Alex Fierro, under disguise as Samirah. He offers it to her, and the rites are conducted as the giant and his wife are blessed by the sword and two gold wedding rings. For the final part of the ceremony, he summons the hammer, but the proceedings are interrupted as a fight breaks loose. Thrym and the other giants are pitted against their guests. Thrym puts up a fight before Thor and the others arrive, and is promptly smashed by Vidar's shoe.
Trivia[]
