“ | Friends? They are your subjects, Thrym, not your friends! Start acting like a king! | ” |
–Thrynga to her brother, Thrym, in the Hammer of Thor |
Thrynga was a mountain giantess. She is the sister of Thrym III and granddaughter of the original Thrym who stole Mjolnir. She was killed by the thunder god, Thor.
Personality[]
Thrynga, like all jotun, is conniving and full of greed. She bears resentment towards the gods, especially Thor, for humiliating the giants. Thrynga's wrath earned her a reputation among the jotun tribes, who feared her over her brother. She shows disdain towards her kin and finds their sloppiness intolerable. Unlike her brother, Thrynga was not too keen on trusting Loki, only playing along for a chance to steal the thunder god's hammer. Thrynga cares nothing for her brother, who she seeks to overthrow.
Appearance[]
Thrynga was a fearsome, seven foot tall giantess with hair stark white done in two braids. She wore a dress stitched entirely from white furs. Thrynga had bulging eyes the size of oranges and a nose that looked like it had been broken several times. Her lips and teeth were stained black. Her voice was described to be gravelly and rough.
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard[]
The Hammer of Thor[]
Thrynga is first mentioned briefly a few times. She is first sighted in Magnus's dream vision chiding her brother, then is reported on by the far-seeing god Heimdall.
Thrynga officially meets Magnus and his friends as their escort into the giants' cavern at Bridal Veil Falls. Before they enter the giantess attempts to get the Skofnung Sword from Magnus, and is visibly annoyed when he points out that he can't give it away until during the wedding ceremony. She leads them down the underground tunnel to where the wedding was held. There, she snaps at the giants and makes them tidy up in front of their guests. Later throughout, she bides her time for a chance to retrieve the hammer.
She and her brother lead them to the Cavern of Loki, where the ceremony would take place. When the fights break loose she survives the initial attack, attempting to retrieve Sumarbrander from Magnus. However, Thrynga is soon destroyed alongside her other brethren by Thor, who kills her with lightning from Mjolnir.
Trivia[]
- Thrynga's grandfather, Thrym, was the giant who first stole the hammer from Thor. Thor succeeded in killing Thrym but left Thrynga and her brother alive.
