Travis was born to Hermes and an unknown mortal woman, a few years after his birth Hermes returned to his mother and the two gave him a younger brother Connor, making the two one of the rare full-blooded demigod siblings to not be twins.
At one point the brothers were brought to Camp Half-Blood.
Because Luke Castellan betrayed the camp, Connor and Travis became the new counselors of the Hermes' cabin. Percy says he can never remember who is older, although later in the series, it was revealed that Travis is the older sibling. Percy told him and his brother a joke about how their surname "Stoll" sounded just like the word "stole" and it was ironic that their dad was the god of thieves, but they didn't get the joke.
In the chariot races, Travis and Connor manned the Hermes chariot. Percy states that he shudders to think what schemes they have cooked up. Unfortunately, right after the race begins, they ram into the Apollo chariot and both chariots are flipped over.
In the next race, the Stoll brothers attack Clarisse La Rue in the Ares chariot with javelins. They fall behind as Connor has a fierce fight with Clarisse as Travis drives. They end up in third place, behind Percy and the Ares chariot.
When Percy first arrives at camp, he sees Travis and Connor trying to break into the camp store. In the game of Capture the Flag against the Hunters, they are both on defense with Percy and a few others. Unfortunately, they both get wounded by the hunter Phoebe and Connor ends up with two arrows in his helmet.
Later, when Chiron calls a meeting, Travis and Connor go to represent the Hermes cabin. Connor and Travis give Zoë Nightshade a collector's T-shirt to give to Phoebe. It is later revealed that the T-shirt was sprayed with poisonous centaur blood and that Aphrodite gave it to them so that Percy could go on the quest.
When Percy arrives at camp, he sees Connor and Travis in the driveway of the Big House, trying to hot-wire the camp's SUV. In the scorpion war game, they are paired together, which is no surprise, because they do everything together. They aren't very stealthy, as Percy and Annabeth both hear them stumbling through the woods, cursing.
They both attend the war council with the other head counselors of the other cabins. Travis offends Clarisse La Rue by saying she is too chicken to enter the Labyrinth, which he then says he didn't mean to get her so upset. They both fight bravely in the Battle of the Labyrinth and both survived.
Connor and Travis were both interviewed by Rick Riordan; they told him about the Golden Mango prank they pulled on the Aphrodite cabin. They tossed a mango painted gold into the cabin with the words for the hottest on it so they would fight each other for it. They ended up getting busted however and the Aphrodite campers used permanent makeup on him so he looked like a clown for a month, while Connor's clothes were made two sizes too small.
This prank mirrors what Eris pulled on Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite by tossing a Golden Apple between them and the three fought over it, eventually leading to the Judgement of Paris and the Trojan War.
Travis and his brother attend the war council that Chiron calls. Neither of them seem to be bothered by the fact that Clarisse La Rue isn't speaking to any of them. When Percy mentions that there is a spy, Connor says that they have suspected a spy for years and that it is probably someone who knew Luke well. He glances at Annabeth, but then quickly looks away, stating "It could be anybody."
It is revealed that the Stoll brothers have somewhat of a rivalry with Katie Gardner, the head counselor of Demeter's cabin ever since they decorated the roof of her cabin with chocolate Easter bunnies. Travis and Connor both get very angry when she suggests that the spy is one of Luke's siblings. This causes an argument between the three until it is eventually broken up by Silena and Pollux. Percy then learns the gods are away from Olympus fighting Typhon, leaving Olympus undefended. When Percy claims that Kronos is planning another attack, but Travis says he did until Percy and Charles Beckendorf sunk the Princess Andromeda. The meeting ends soon after. The next day, Travis and the rest of the campers attend Beckendorf's funeral.
They both come along with most of the camp when Percy calls them into the city and they go up to Olympus. Their father, Hermes arrives and is not happy. It is unknown if this was the first time Travis and Connor met him, but they don't speak to him, and are happy when Annabeth tells them to lead the group into the city, giving them an important job right in front of their dad. After a while they run back in and show Percy and Annabeth that Morpheus put the entire island of Manhattan to sleep. Both brothers are interested of taking advantage of the sleeping city and raid a candy store, which Katie Gardner scolds them for. Connor takes half of the Hermes cabin and defends the Manhattan Bridge, and Travis takes the other half and defends the Brooklyn Bridge. Most of them survive.
Travis leads a small group of demigods in a raid of a close by drug store for medicine and painkillers. He stays in fairly good shape throughout the battle, not being majority wounded and continuing to fight throughout the battle, implying he is a decent fighter. After Silena's death, Travis and Connor ask Percy about her death. He refuses to let her be known as a spy, although they had already heard it. They discuss the advantage of the elevator and tell him they already tried to disable it, but it is magic and they can't. Connor complains that there are no more reinforcements, giving Percy the idea to send a message to Nico.
After the battle, Travis and his brother come to Olympus and report to Percy that his parents and Chiron are alive. Travis ultimately survives and Connor does as well, and they head back to camp to share the duty as the counselors of the much-less-crowded Hermes cabin. Both brothers were involved on the eavesdropping of Percy and Annabeth and it was Connor who has the idea of throwing them in the lake. Wich later led to them kissing and starting to date in between The Last Olympian and The Lost Hero
Travis sat at the campfire when Jason Grace was given his quest to save Hera. He suggested that Annabeth should go on the quest as she was the most experienced camper since Percy's disappearance. She declined his suggestion, as she hated Hera and the prophecy said that a child of Aphrodite and Hephaestus were needed.
Travis was later seen trying to light a ping pong ball on fire at the council meeting. Apparently it worked, since Chiron asked him to extinguish it when the meeting started.
Travis is attending college, leaving Connor in charge of the Hermes cabin while he is gone.
|“||They are both so unlike my old enemy Luke that it's hard to believe they're all sons of Hermes.||”|
–Percy, talking about the Stoll Brothers
Percy states that they are pretty nice guys, but one should always keep one hand on their wallet when they are around and never give them access to shaving cream "unless you want to find your sleeping bag full of it." He and his brother Connor also played a prank on the Aphrodite cabin by spray painting a mango gold and wrote "For the hottest" on it and leaving it in the Aphrodite's cabin while they were at archery class so the cabin would start fighting over it. The Stoll brothers said that when they came back, everything was haywire, like they thought. The girls were ripping each other's clothes and throwing lipstick, jewelry, and Gucci shoes out the windows. Eventually, the cabin found out and put Permanent Makeup on Travis' face, and he commented that he "looked like a clown for a month." Also, Connor appears to be the smarter of the two, while Travis is more mischievous. According to Percy, both Connor and Travis are so unlike his enemy Luke, that it makes it hard for him to believe that they're all sons of Hermes.
Travis is tall and skinny with a mop of curly brown hair that hangs in his blue eyes. Like Connor, he wears an orange camp T-shirt untucked over baggy shorts. Like most of the other children of Hermes, he has elvish features, upturned eyebrows, a sarcastic smile and a gleam in his eyes, like he was ready to "drop a firecracker down your shirt". He has a crooked smile to match his personality and crooked sense of humor. Also, Travis is a little bit taller than his brother, Connor, which is the only way people can tell them apart.
Travis is a reasonably powerful demigod, though not as powerful as his half-brother Luke.
- Fighting Skills: Travis is implied to have good fighting skills during The Last Olympian, since he stays in good shape throughout the entire Battle of Manhattan.
- Cunning: Travis is uncommonly cunning (even more so than Connor), and, together with his brother, is usually able to get away with their outrageous and mischievous pranks. However, the main prankster of the two is Travis.
- Enhanced theft abilities: Travis is able to supernaturally steal things without people noticing, even other demigods.
- Clauditiskinesis: Travis can magically sense the internal structure and mechanisms of any lock he touches, and is able to make it unlock, even telekinetically. Travis and Connor have no problems with high-jacking the camp's SUV in The Battle of the Labyrinth. This doesn't work on cursed locks, though.
- Lock Intuition: Travis can also identify curses and traps placed on locks. If he concentrates hard enough, he can deactivate them.
- Money manipulation: Since Hermes is the god of merchants, Travis is quite good with money, and is really fond of playing poker as a result. He even tries to convince Nico that poker is a much better game than Mythomagic in The Titan's Curse.
Being the sons of Hermes, the god of thieves, Percy jokes about their last name "Stoll" as it is a homonym for "stole". However, neither Travis nor Connor appeared to understand the joke.
Also, the character Travis Stoll may be inspired by a real person of the same name. In the acknowledgments of The Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan thanks his "cadre of middle-school beta testers," including "Travis Stoll, clever and quick as Hermes." Also, on Riordan's website it says that Travis Stoll was one of his former students.
"Travieso" in Spanish means 'trouble maker' and sounds a little like "Travis".
His name is also a play on Travel as Hermes is the God of Travelers.
- Travis wasn't introduced until The Sea of Monsters, but Percy mentions meeting him during The Lightning Thief.
- Travis and his brother, Connor Stoll, were the first campers to share the position of head counselor. Holly and Laurel Victor of the Nike cabin share the position as well.
- It is said by Percy in The Sea of Monsters that the Stoll brothers are not twins, with Travis being the older sibling. However the two look almost identical, only being differentiated by their height.
- Travis, along with his brother, were the only known named children of Hermes who were never on Kronos' side.
- Connor and Travis are somewhat similar to Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter series, in that both sets of brothers are good friends with the protagonist of their series (Percy Jackson and Harry Potter respectively) and have a penchant for outrageous and mischievous pranks.
