A person’s troth is their word, faith, honor, and soul, by swearing an oath on their troth, an individual is creating a binding oath. Failure to comply would result in death or eternal imprisonment in Helheim.

When being dragged across the Boston skyline, Magnus Chase is tricked into swearing by his troth to Utgard-Loki to get him one of Idunn's Apples of Immortality in exchange of help from Utgard-Loki for recovering Sumarbrander.
Later, Magnus to get Ran swearing to trade with him and Samirah for Sword of Summer, he tells Ran to swear by Troth. But since goddess knew better than that, she says she will trade which she did indeed, without swearing by troth.
