Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a television series based on the novel series of the same name by Rick Riordan who co-created the series with Jonathan E. Steinberg. It is produced by the Gotham Group, Mythomagic, Inc, Quaker Moving Pictures and 20th Television.[1]

The series premiered on December 19, 2023.[2]

Production for the second season has been confirmed.

Premise

The 12 year-old demigod son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson, is accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt.[3]Percy sets out on a quest with his friends Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood to uncover the truth and save his mother from the Underworld.

Development

It was first reported on We Got This Covered in September 2019, and three months later, Rick Riordan confirmed that he is in talks with Disney.[6][7][8][1] On May 14th, 2020, Rick Riordan and his wife Becky announced that an adaptation for Disney+ is in development with the two of them being involved.[9] On July 6th, 2020, Rick Riordan stated in a tweet response to that a likely release date for the series would be 2022 at the earliest.[10] Rick Riordan stated that it would be live-action and he was writing a pilot script.[11] On June 13, 2021, in a blog post, Riordan confirmed that the pilot script has been completed and the season outline is "in good shape".[12] On December 10th, 2020, the show's logo was revealed.[13] It's reported that the budget would be higher than the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars [14] and that it initially took forever to "get off the ground".[15]

The casting process has started for the title role of Percy Jackson on April 27, 2021.[16] That same day, it was announced that Jonathan E. Steinberg, the co-creater of Black Sails, will executive produce and co-write the series' pilot with Riordan.[17] Steinberg, along with Dan Shotz, are the series' showrunners.[18] On May 12, 2021, it was announced that season 1 would consist of 8 episodes.[19] The Percy Jackson writing room has started as of July 12, 2021.[20] The next day on his blog, Riordan confirmed that other writers have joined the project: Daphne Olive, Monica Owusu-Breen, and Joe Tracz (writer of The Lightning Thief musical). Additionally, Xavier Stiles, Zoë Neary, and Stewart Strandberg serve as assistant writers for the series.[18] On October 24, 2021, Riordan announced that the pilot of the show would be directed by James Bobin (director of Dora and the Lost City of Gold). He also stated that they have just turned in the script for episode 2 to the studio, and are now working on the outlines for episodes 3 and 4, which he expects to be completed and approved by January.[21] On December 9, 2021, Riordan announced that the casting process has begun for characters Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood.[22]

On January 25th, 2022, the project was officially given a green light at the studio. The pilot episode was written by Riordan and Jon Steinberg while James Bobin directed.[23] On March 27, 2023, Riordan confirmed that the writers are developing scripts for season 2, based on the second novel, The Sea of Monsters.[24] On July 14, 2023, an official teaser poster was released. On August 18, 2023 (Percy's birthday), a second teaser was released revealing the release date to be December 20, 2023.[25] On September 19th, 2023, an official teaser trailer was released on the Disney+ YouTube channel. On September 28th, 2023, Knight Edge Media revealed that the writer's room consists of Rick Riordan, Jonathan E. Steinberg, Monica Owusu-Breen, Joe Tracz, Andrew Miller, and Craig Silverstein. Production on Season 1 wrapped on February 3, 2023.[26] On September 30th, 2023, Knight Edge Media revealed the episode titles of the series. On November 16th, 2023, the official trailer was revealed for the first season was released on Disney+ and its YouTube channel.

On February 7, 2024, Disney renewed the series for a second season based on The Sea of Monsters.[27] On April 4, it was announced that Albert Kim, the showrunner for Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender, will serve as executive producer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians.[28] Tamara Becher, who had previously worked on Doom Patrol, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, The Runaways and the third season of Daredevil, is revealed to be one of the writers for season 2.

Casting

On April 11th, 2022, it was announced that Walker Scobell was cast as Percy Jackson.[29] On May 5th, 2022, it was announced that Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri were cast as Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood respectively.[30] On June 2nd, Riordan confirmed that production has officially begun. It was also revealed that Sally Jackson would be portrayed by Virginia Kull, Gabe Ugliano would be portrayed by Timm Sharp, Dionysus is portrayed by Jason Mantzoukas, Alecto is portrayed by Megan Mullally, and Chiron is portrayed by Glynn Turman.[31] On June 21st, it's revealed that Luke Castellan will be portrayed by Charlie Bushnell, Nancy Bobofit will be portrayed by Olivea Morton, and Clarisse La Rue will be portrayed by Dior Goodjohn.[32] On October 13th, 2022, it was announced that Medusa will be portrayed by Jessica Parker Kennedy, Echidna will be portrayed by Suzanne Cryer, and Ares will be portrayed by Adam Copeland.[33] On November 7th, 2022, it was announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda will play Hermes.[34] On November 18th, 2022, it was announced that Jay Duplass will play Hades and Timothy Omundson will play Hephaestus.[35] On January 26, 2023, it was announced that Lance Reddick will play Zeus and Toby Stephens will play Poseidon.[36]

Trivia

  • Soon after announcing the series, Rick Riordan released a picture on Twitter showing the title page of the pilot script, which reveals that Riordan will be a scriptwriter on the series.
  • The episode titles are all derived from the books' chapter titles.
  • In commemoration of the TV series, Rick Riordan planned to pitch three new novels for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series set between The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo, during Percy Jackson's senior year.
  • The Season One finale marked the final TV appearance of Lance Reddick before his passing on March 17th, 2023.
